Check craigslist
Nice work!
I may take you up on the offer, but I'll check Craigslist first. I'm not sure if I'll have the time to drive out to Syracuse for the next few days. I'll have room in the freezer outside to store it if need be.
This is the second year that we've been allowed to hunt with rifles in Ontario County, and my first actually doing so. I bought a Remington 700 in .308 and a Leupold VX-R 4-12x scope about 10 months ago. I never would have been able to shoot him with my shotgun with a fixed 4x scope.
Where I hunt, the deer generally move downhill at night to the valley floor to feed. This guy was no exception and I took him about 8 minutes before the actual time of sunset. I saw him when he was 100 yards away and I quickly got off the chair I was sitting on and knelt next to a 24" diameter tree that had been logged 15 years ago. Using the stump as a rest, I got him into view. His vitals and rack were blocked by a large maple tree, but he was staring right at me.
He must have seen me move to the stump, but I was still 90 yards away (I ranged it after I recovered him) so he didn't perceive me as a direct threat. After a 15 second stare down, I could tell he was nervous. Slowly, I took my hand off the trigger and changed the scope to 12 power. I had to re-find him in my scope which took a couple seconds. He was still nervous, but standing still, pointing downhill with his head turned about 45 degrees at me. His vitals were still blocked.
I lined up the crosshairs just below where his spine would be for the neck shot and slowly pulled the trigger. The bullet was on target. It entered about an inch and a half below the spine, traveled a bit, caught a major vein or artery, broke the neck/spine, and came out the other side. The buck dropped right there on the spot and died instantly.
