Nice work!

I may take you up on the offer, but I'll check Craigslist first. I'm not sure if I'll have the time to drive out to Syracuse for the next few days. I'll have room in the freezer outside to store it if need be.

This is the second year that we've been allowed to hunt with rifles in Ontario County, and my first actually doing so. I bought a Remington 700 in .308 and a Leupold VX-R 4-12x scope about 10 months ago. I never would have been able to shoot him with my shotgun with a fixed 4x scope.

Where I hunt, the deer generally move downhill at night to the valley floor to feed. This guy was no exception and I took him about 8 minutes before the actual time of sunset. I saw him when he was 100 yards away and I quickly got off the chair I was sitting on and knelt next to a 24" diameter tree that had been logged 15 years ago. Using the stump as a rest, I got him into view. His vitals and rack were blocked by a large maple tree, but he was staring right at me.

He must have seen me move to the stump, but I was still 90 yards away (I ranged it after I recovered him) so he didn't perceive me as a direct threat. After a 15 second stare down, I could tell he was nervous. Slowly, I took my hand off the trigger and changed the scope to 12 power. I had to re-find him in my scope which took a couple seconds. He was still nervous, but standing still, pointing downhill with his head turned about 45 degrees at me. His vitals were still blocked.

I lined up the crosshairs just below where his spine would be for the neck shot and slowly pulled the trigger. The bullet was on target. It entered about an inch and a half below the spine, traveled a bit, caught a major vein or artery, broke the neck/spine, and came out the other side. The buck dropped right there on the spot and died instantly.

Nice! I've only taken one deer with rifle, it is fun for sure!

I had a series of close encounters this year but couldn't get a high percentage shot opportunity with the bow. That's how it goes. It's tough to have to pass up a 120" 8 and a 140+" 10 that were both inside the 40 yard marker, but not in a lane.

I had deer inside 5 yards on two occasions. One too early/dark, and one too late/dark.

I got in an empty freezer panic come last week of bow and went "meat mode". Brown = Down. I took a gomer 5 pointer but lost blood trail as snow rolled in. He went into neighboring property, so between that and the trail, and being 20 degrees, I let him lay. Got permission next am and took up the trail.

Found him, but I wasn't 1st in line

PICKED CLEAN!

Doing a euro on it as we speak. Head was all that was left.

That's a bummer you didn't end up getting him. I heard coyotes a few different times this year. On opening morning, I had one come in but it was way too dark still. We take them out every chance we get.

Shots on big deer are hard to pass up, but we know it's the right thing to do when the shot is marginal. I've never seen a live 140" deer. Or a 120"!

I know the empty freezer panic you speak of. I got a doe opening night with the bow, and now this one. We were pretty empty before that. Two should last us the year, but I may end up going to my uncle's to try and tag one more doe. Another 40 pounds of cheddar jalapeno sausage sounds good. :D

I'll let you know in the next day or two about the mount. I'll do some scouring and calling around.

I found the 120 on my own. The 140 (and I'm being conservative) was at a rarely hunted private property that I was lucky enough to get to tag along to. Absolute slammer. Easily over 200# on the hoof. I'd never seen anything like it live from a stand. He was a legend maker.

I've got some does in the freezer now, but I may be washing down the venison kielbasa and pan sausage with buck-tag soup. Went all in during bow, and the wife's tolerance meter is pegged.

You should be able to finde someone close for the euro. The only appeal to me doing it is immediate gratification.

Or honestly, do it yourself. It can be tedious, but it's the quickest, and the cheapest ;)

I think I'm going to attempt to do the mount myself. I'll be raking leaves for a couple hours tomorrow morning, so it will be a good time to do some boiling. I'll post up a pic or two when I'm done.

SIMMER!!!!! Do NOT boil. If you want tips (and mistakes I've made) please PM me, or if you want, call.

Let me know.

Don't use BLEACH!!!!
