No PE on new corals

Hi ,

last weekend I acquired 2 types of corals from a friend.

a Teal staghorn acro and a blue staghorn acro

Both colonies looked great and I received fresh cut frags of these massive colonies.

When I came home , I glued them onto small rocks and put them in in my tank.
Next day the teal one had already started to RTN. I've cut some tips trying to save them but no luck. 2 days later all branches are white.
The other coral, also started to RTN on day 2, I cut of the piece that was affected, and re-glued the 2 good tips.

So 6 days later, the blue stag still looks blue, although light blue instead of dark blue, but I still haven't seen 1 polyp on this coral.

All my other corals in the tank are doing great. good PE and growth.

Is my blue stag a goner or are there ways to promote PE?

params : Ca=350; KH 8, PH 8.2, equipment see below.

Any info, pointers or questions would be greatly appreciated,

Waffleman

Just have to wait it out and see if it will acclimate to your tank. No way to promote PE that I know of. Hope it makes it for you.

The low calcium is not the cuase of your STN/RTN . I would check the flow rate around them and what ever glue you used could be the problem. I was told the fresh cut frags should be left in the tank for 3 to 4 days before glueing them down. This information was given to me by Kris wray at reefermadness he told me they are streesed out afeter being cut and they need to settle in before placing epoxy/glue on them that does more harm then good. Get new frags let them settle in for a few days then glue them down.

interesting that is the first time I have heard that. If that is the case the 4 I glued yesterday will be in trouble?

Yup frsh cut frags need to settle in............This was a direct stament made to me by reefermadness and they aure do have nice stuff to prove it:)

IME, I cut and glue immediately, and all of my frags are fine. I have used all types of super glue without problems. Not to say that the frags aren't stressed out, but I have never had a promblem with RTN. I am not even sure that flow would be an issue here. It sounds as though the tissue is not healing , so I would assume it is a problem with water parameters.

How were the frags acclimated? How often do you change your water? How is the PE on all of your other corals? Any chances that you have something picking at the base of the frag? If your water parameters are very different than the person you bought your frags from and you didn't acclimate properly, that would definitely stress out the frags and prevent them from healing and thriving in your tank.

Hopefully no one thought that I am bashing on their opinions, this is what I have observed in my own tank.

Here are a couple pics of corals that were cut and glued

thanks for in the input everyone.

I think I will acclimate better by waiting to glue them next time. My acclimation period was short, only about an hour.

The cut , the transfer and then the glue down, is probably a bit much in one day.

The tank they came from has about 400ppm calcium. I have received several other corals from the same tank in the past year or so, and they all do fine.
All my all corals are extending fine. My milliporas, green w/blue polyps and monti's are all open.

We will see what gives in the next couple of days.

The low CA is being addressed by starting to use the 2part solution (bi-ionic) about 3 weeks ago.

Thanks again,

i don't think what reefermadness is saying really applies to locally acquired frags, but rather when a night of shipping is involved. i glue fresh cut frags often and i don't think ive ever seen a loss attributable to the glueing

plus, most of what reefermadness sells as frags in the frag packs are wild collected. imo different situation with tank raised frags taken from other reefers that have been acclimated to tank conditions already

Still no PE, but still shows color.

Tank params:
Ca: 345ppm
KH: 8.5d
Ph: 8.4
Mg: 1260

I now dose 12ml in my 29G. Part 1 in the morning before lights on. and part 2 before lights off at night. I finally start to see an upward trend in the calcium and KH levels.

dosing like he is will be fine, you don't have to dose at the same time, just same amounts. dosing at different times of day will also help prevent precipitation
