Noah & The Great Flood: Why is it always the RO Unit???

Mako Shark II

Fish are Friends not Food
In the Bible, Seven is a “complete” number.

Well after Seven tries, I finally succeeded and last night I completely flooded out the Sump Closet (AGAIN!!!!), only this time I REALLY did a good job.

Apparently, some moron turned ON the RO/DI system last night to get a head start on the planned water change for today, but then got sleepy and opted to hit the rack early, forgetting his previous plans.

(Just shoot me now…………)

So imagine my surprise this morning at 7:20 AM when “Manu” (the 12-year old Hawaiian Reefer son, a.k.a. 'Rhys'), came into the bedroom and exclaimed:

“YOU LEFT THE RO UNIT ON AGAIN AND WE’RE ALL FLOODED!!!

(Insert shock & awe here….)

The sudden awakening and sobering realization of this conveyance and recollection of previous unfulfilled actions, was following by a precipitous amount of verbosity, most of which was prefaced with a running diatribe of expletives, which are in conflict with Reef Central’s moral and ethical conduct rulings; thus, I am precluded and not at liberty to accurately convey the exact interpretation of said invective harangue, but suffice it to say, it was a doosie!

I immediately ran to the Sump Closet and threw open the door. (Expletive deleted!!! Sigh......…) :hmm2:

Now the room’s light was left on (recall the previous attempt to top off the RO Vat from the evening before?) and the Sump Refugium light cast a bright glow about only 2 inches over the now overflowing and totally full 30 gallon Sump, which normally has a nominal level of roughly 18 usable gallons, barring the aforementioned cranial rectal inversion.

Not only was there about three-quarters of an inch of water in the closet, but the sole plates in the adjacent walls were not sufficient enough to stem the tide. Thus, the Bathroom, back hallway, Laundry room and yes, the Keeping room where the display tank resides, were all victims of this apparent Katrina redux.

Having no other options, I summoned said lad to retrieve the industrial duty wet-dry vac from the garage, and so began the seventh version of the floor flushing of the already cleanest floors in the entire household.

All of which, brings me to my point finally:

I have had discussions with the LFS regarding a positive method to shut-off the tremendous water pressure from the RO/DI unit, as the present “Float” style valve is not sufficient to hold back the pressure from the main line, which causes to leak at the quick-disconnect fitting at the clear PVC tubing from the RO unit at the float switch. Ergo, we were discussing some electrical solenoid system to kill water pressure to the RO vat and stave off an eighth likely occurrence.

(Note: It should be noted at this point in our story that it is because I am in the midst of setting up my new GEO Kalk Wasser reactor with the Tsunami ATO, that THIS is why the RO vat was nearly empty, whilst the Sump and floor were at capacity.)

So! What electrically controlled Solenoid system can I use to stave off an eighth potential flood, Noah??

well atleast you didnt get the bad news at 1;30 am like i did,i thought the whole tank cracked and i was getting ready to find fish flopping on the floor, but it was the 45g container i was filling fell over and flooded the fish room and my bedroom, there should be a clock with an alarm on it that sounds like the tornado sirens,

Wow. Hate to hear that. I have had a few minor "floods", but none of the Noah proportions you describe. My 2 larger tanks are upstairs, so I have a few "water marks" on the downstairs ceiling. I learned my lesson with the RO/DI early on. I fill my 5 gal buckets in DH bath upstairs and the first time I did this, it overflowed. I then placed the bucket in my DH shower the second
time, but when the bucket got full, the tubing just floated over the side of the bucket and into the floor, hence another flood. Now I keep the bucket in the shower and keep the tubing clamped to the side of it. No more floods since.

The Next house will be built Around a huge tank, with floor drains, 20A circuits and plumbing. (In My dreams)

LOL! I had more water on the Floor than any nano tank out there!

The real shame is: I just completely screwed up my water chemistry. With all that RO going & flowing into the Sump, my SG dropped to about .15 (I haven't even checked anything else yet, but I'm sure it's all whacked.)

So that "water change" is really needed now!! Right now, I'm doing that with a fairly stout mix, gradually to bring the params back up, which affords me time on RC.

....but the Sump is what got flooded this time. (That's never happened before and it won't ever happen again, once the Tsunami & Kalk Reactor are in, completely!)

It's the RO Vat (plumb fitting) that normally leaks. The RO Unit (pressure) is just the culprit.

BTW Joey, the Sea-Swirl is working great! Thanks!

As you've found out, repeatedly, you shouldn't use just a float valve ( and you know why) but you need a shutoff kit. Most , if not all, companies that sell RO units sell them and they are not elaborate or expensive.

It is also a mistake to have a system plumbed that will allow a vast or unlimited supply of top off water to enter it in case of a component failure and you, unfortunately, know that now as well.

Well, thank you Dave for that constructive criticism. I think. I thought I had sufficiently beaten myself up enough, but apparently not. However, you also failed to answer the question. What electrically controlled Solenoid system can I use to stave off an eighth potential flood?

What do you have??

(I'll be along later to see.)

marty im sorry but i had to laugh, ive done that a few trimes my self being on the second floor of an apartment building, ive woke up to 25 or so gallons of water on the floor, as for a solenoid type system or piecing one together go with a low voltage , ill look around the shop and see if i have any ice maching parts laying around , the water fill solenoid valves are all plastic with 24 v coils, also i would sugest a dual float switch set up one at where you realy want the water to stop at and another a inch or 2 above that point as a safety

OMG...I flooded my house last night too but I was so dumbfounded by it that when I stepped in water in my dining room this morning, my first thout was that my 9.5 pound shitzu had done a no-no...it took 3 mushy steps to realize I had left my RO running in my pantry...I grabbed the steam cleaner and got up about 8 buckets full before I had to leave for work ....sad thing is my timer I use when I am running RO actually went off last night and I was baking cookies for the party tonight at the time so I shut it off and checked cookies instead of shutting down the water...the cookies are fine but my house caught ....well you know ....
It is such a disheartening feeling when you step on your pergo flooring and water shoots up your pantsleg....geezz.....

It'll be enough when WE say it's enough.

Marty everone has to get there jabs in on you since you are not going to be at the party tonight.

Everyone deserves to step in a little Ro water every now and then.

My waders are hanging on the rack next to my vat, which is in my garage. Good place for them huh!!

Does it not seem when you really need the water that the RO unit is so terribly slow in how much water that it puts out, But when you leave it on and let it overflow it seems like it is filtering at the full flow of the faucet!!

Go figure.

Hey Marty! Sorry to hear about your flood. Don't know how many times I've left a bucket in my kitchen floor and overflowed it. I often say that my wife must have the cleanest kitchen floor in Memphis due to the many times I've cleaned it. The one time that I put too much fresh water in my tank(Spg dropped to about 1.022), I just used new salt water for top off until the water got back up to desired Spg. Not sure that will work as well for you since you had such a big drop. Good luck!

Marty.. You sir have just dropped from hero status! Here I was all set up to build me a auto changer next month(I'm really tired of humping water).

Please let me know what you end up doing.

PS to regain hero status a nice flow diagram of plumbing would help :-)

My RO/DI is in the laundry room. When I turn it on I always turn the light on and leave the door open. Before I go to bed I will notice the light being on and remember to turn it off. Every once in a while one of the kids will turn it off when they're all here on a Sunday "doing us a favor". I normally have an overflow about every 6 months but our laundry room floor slopes slightly toward the corner of the house so most of the flood goes under the house. From time to time I wake up at night and check it just to be sure.

Thanks, but not Necessary. I should be good to go, but today I’ve got some work to do.

I've put so much water on the floor I'd make Noah look like a puddle pirate.

Arrrrrrr matie!!!!!! Yeah, but it didn’t stop the abuse as I was walkin’ into yesterday at Kermit’s now did it? (And I wasn’t even wearing “flood pants”!

1) I'm crushed, but water changes "On the Fly" are still the best feature on this tank.

I'm really tired of humping water.
2) I don't even know how to reply to that.
