Noob RO/DI question

I just bought this used. What is the square thing at the front of the membrane housing? Why the T valve coming from the "out" of the membrane right back into the "in"?

Also, I can't seem to find replacement filters, can someone tell me where to find them?

Thanks! Tomo

That looks like a pretty standard sized RO/DI, any of the different places that sell them should be able to get replacements. I like www.buckeyefieldsupply.com, but there are a lot of good places. Not sure what the square block is.

I just got a RO/DI system and have a noob question as well...

What's the best way to connect the tube for the "in" to a water supply? I obviously have no plumbing experience so... do i have to buy any extra parts or what? The instructions that came with the system don't tell me how to connect the thing to the water supply.

Common problems for noobs with RO/DI

Hello:

I wanted to post a few experiances that I went through when I got my first RO/DI system.

First, MAKE ABSULUTELY SURE you have an RO/DI system and not just an RO system. from the pic you posted it looks like an RO system and not an RO/DI (unless you have another filter that you didnt post)

Usually (but not always) RO systems will have an additional DI canister that attaches to the output line of the RO filter. in essence it looks like a filter that filter that you posted but it will be a single filter instead of 3.

Second, GET A TDS meter. I cannot stress this enough. you can buy them at your LFS for around $20. You should test the water of your RO system every month or every other month, usually the lifespan of filters will be ~6 months. if your TDS is anything other than 0 you know its time to replace the filters.

NOTE: if your TDS is higher than 0 with your new filters then it probably means you dont have a DI unit and its just an RO system.

Here is the link to the place I bought my RO/DI unit, they have really good explanations on how to plump the system correctly as well as other useful information.

soulbeaver - I had the exact same question and my plumber brother gave me a piercing valve like the one pictured below. Connect this around your copper water pipe in the house, tighten the bolts then turn the valve knob until it "pierces" the copper pipe. Then when you back the valve off you have water!

This one doesn't show the rubber grommet that will be in place around the pierced hole but you get the idea.

Kent Marine says this is an RO/DI so I'm pretty sure it is. Don't RO only systems just have sediment, carbon and membrane? This has sediment, carbon, membrane and deionizer....I think.
