yeah, the bubbles are definitely from algae/diatoms etc. Just O2 being produced. This is often the cause of micro-bubbles BTW.

as for the corals, it is really impossible to diagnose with photos. Possible issues are STN due to water quality, acro eating flat worms (AEFW), naughty crabs, shading etc. Typically with frags, shading is not the problem. STN is very possible if not probable. And AEFW to a lesser extent.

What to do:

1. Inspect corals VERY CLOSELY for AEFW. If you find them, dip in Melafix, swish and inspect again. QT immediately.

2. Of course, check all water params, flow, and light.

3. night watch: flashlight duty...very important aspect of reef keeping. See if anything is munching on the corals.

And I strongly disagree about fragging troubled corals. Sorry Tyler! Any time I see STN, RTN, etc. on a coral, I immediately frag it. I have saved many colonies this way. I also toss the damaged coral back into the tank, sometimes in a "behind-the-scenes" spot, and see if it grows back.

very often a coral that appears completely dead, overgrown with algae, etc. for many months or even a year, will sprout new life. Considering how much this stuff costs and how attached we get to our corals, finding an area out of public view within the display makes sense to me. There I can have my ailing corals and allow "nature" to take its course.

Well I checked my dKH tonight and its finally starting to decrease. It was 9.6, down from 10.6 this morning. My magnesium is still hovering around 1060...I think i could have an old faulty test as i have been dosing a fair amount each day and night. Test will be here tomorrow. Also, scheduled tomorrow will be my 200 gallon water change. I am hoping that will take care of the nitrates (5-10ish) and I can clean the sand bed and the sumps. I will also get the front and rear viewing panels cleaned up. Yup, Its gonna be a FUN day!!!

I am thinking going forward I will be doing 75 gallon water changes weekly.

Yeah I told you earlier lol It takes alot to get it up to par. But the funny thing about Magnesium is that once its at its level and your calcium and alk are stable it doesnt move much. ***Some one correct me if im wrong but I remember reading that if your Magnesium is not up to par your corals do not use up the calcium properly, which in return the magnesium lets used up more***

I know without proper magnesium levels, corals won't be able to calcify at the rate they would if magnesium was in line.

I am slowly adding more and more magnesium to the tank. I am hoping to get it up about 50ppm/day. So about 4-5 days and I should be okay.

I can see that most of my corals are growing from previous pictures, but probably much less than if they had the correct parameters!

So I should have most of these problems solved in the next week.

I got my phosphate photometer and some new test kits...Wow, was there a big difference.

Okay, here are the new parameters as of 1pm.

Ca - 450
dKH - 9.4
Mag - 1360, maybe 1400
PO4 - .04
NO3 - 5ppm, maybe a touch less
pH - 8.1
pH Effluent - 6.6
ORP - 360
Salinity - 1.025

The phosphates do look VERY high, but I think a water change will help quite a bit. Everything else looks close to NSW. I have 200 gallons of saltwater mixing and I will get some new data tonight.

very important w/ that meter make sure its smudge free before using I always handle the vial w/ tissues or toiletpaper. Rinse the vial before every use w/ tank water. for instance I read .04 but then rinsed w/ tank water before the next test (only a couple of minutes later) and it read .01

I was told by someone in the know that I should keep my vials stored in RO water when not in use, so that they don't get water spots.

ALthough you've hit some bumps in the road as we all do with our tanks, things are coming along very nicely. Anxiously waiting on more pics..

Tested PO4 today and its at 0.07. I am still searching for the cause...It does seem like since i added the Ozone reactor some corals are actually have more PE than before. Color is still blah, but i will see what happens after a week of stable pH, Ca, Mg, Salinity, and ORP.

Some things to check:

1. Water purification: Is your RO/DI system removing all PO4 from the incoming water? (test)

2. Water Change water: Is the salt you are using addiing PO4? (Test)

3. Is your Ca reactor adding PO4? This is very common. (test)

4. Detritus: Is there detritus building up under the rocks, in the sump, overflow etc.? (remove)

5. Kalk reactor: Is it adding PO4? (test)

6. Additives: are you adding anything to the system that carries PO4? Many supplements are heavy in PO4. Most fish foods are heavy in PO4. Are you using any coral foods, phytoplankton, vitamins? These are all heavy in PO4.

These are all solvable with the possible exception of the kalk reactor. Just some ideas to help the cause! :)

Things I checked for PO4...

1. RO/DI - 0.03
2. Reef Crystals - 0.05
3. Calcium Reactor - 0.17
4. No Detritus I can see
5. Kalk Reactor - DNT
6. Main Display - 0.04 (down from 0.07 this morning)

Mag is 1475
Ca is 470
dKH is 8.8
Nitrates are 7ish
pH is 8.3-4 throughout the day now
ORP is 355 and slowly climbing
Temp is 79-81 throughout day

I did notice something interesting today. I changed my RO/DI filters about a month ago and today I noticed the 1st filter is a dark rust color. the 2nd filter had some coloration and third nothing. One thing I did when I bought new filters was change the sediment filter from a 5 micron to a 1 micron filter. I am guessing it is trapping more particles and thus making the once "white" filter now "rust". The TDS meter still reads 0 on the water output. Is a PO4 reading of 0.03 okay for RO/DI water?

What should I do about the PO4 levels coming out of the calcium reactor? Should I run this into a fine sand filter (for pH) and then through a phosphate reactor? Right now its just dumping into the refugium and nothing seems to be upset about that...I have some soft coral, sponges, cheato, and fish in there.

I was just doing some night watching on my tank and noticed a half-dollar sized pointy urchin. wow. Since all my rock was introduced dead 6 months ago and i have gotten all my corals on plugs, I am not sure how it could have gotten into my tank...weird. very cool little guy though.

So are you saying to add another canister with a .5 micron sediment filter? Then do i still use the 1 micron filter as well or go back to the 5 micron?

lol No I use .5 micron on my ro/di itself spectrapure had it this way. I was sayin add a prefilter before your ro/di w/ a cheap filter a 1 or 5 it will catch alot before it goes into your filter. Which will allow the filters to last longer for you.

so you have 3 areas of concern. You really should not have any PO4 in your RO/DI water. I would get some input from Scott at SpectraPure. Something is wrong there. Also keep in mind it could be introduced by a container or even a hose.

Regarding the salt, I just wouldn't use it. That puts you in a position of a continuous uphill battle. Even if you run your system perfectly, you will always be adding PO4 when you do a water change.

For the Ca reactor: Always soak your media in RO/DI water ahead of time to leach out as much PO4 as possible. My method is using a 5g bucket, I soak for a day, pour off and refill, soak for another day, and test the water. If there is still PO4 in it, I continue the process until I get zero, but this usally only takes the 3 days.

I run the reactor effluent through GFO to further polish it. Keep in mind that GFO is an iron-based product, and the jury is out on whether it may encourage algal growth itself.

Just some food for thought!

man this is the bomb ive read this whole thing you guys dont play im a newbie i can learn alot from reading thanks to you all maybe you can tell me t5s for a 220 how many thanks and sorry reef and jnarim trying to sneak in and out
