North Dakota Mini-Ocean

When this grows out a bit it's going to be a TOTM contender I'm sure.

Also, allow me to split this thread for you. Gratz. ;)

Thanks Everyone! The nice words are always extra motivation to keep this tank as nice as possible! :)

I can't believe its been almost a year and a half since i started the tank...Only 6 months with corals in it.

Yeah, this hobby is NOT about rushing, unless you want to kill a bunch of stuff. That's one of the things that really gets my goat. When people decide they are just going to set up a tank and do no research, go into PetCo and leave with a tank, fish, sand and food.

True that! I think in the 17 months I've only lost 6 fish and 3 of those killed themselves. I can't wait to get my new profilux! When those reactors get dialed in its gonna be sick...

I haven't lost very many either and virtually all were due to suicidal tendencies and/or probable chemical harvesting.

well, I have had a couple wrasses jump. One was a golden rhomboid that jumped from my QT while I was out fishiing the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Probably a karma thing.

I had a Lineatus choke on macro and rock right in front of me and I could not save him. Just had a bluehead swallow a snail whole (I think, but it took a while for him to kick).

I also had a Labouts jump from the main right around the time I drained the tank for a repair. I have to think it just panicked and we didn't see it jump. I found it a couple or so months later behind some buckets.

I had two Naso tangs die within a week of purchase. They both acted pretty stupid and not in a normal manner at all, giving me the suspicion that they were chemically caught.

I had 11 chromis die over the course of about 2+ years through a concerted process of ostracizing the weakest until there was just but one disfigured fish left. My son's theory is that it just hid from the rest and survived through pure grit.

I had a CBB get stuck in an acro and die. These are really very stupid fish. It got so stuck it took me at least 15 minutes just to pry him out of the coral.

Can't think of any more at the moment.

dave,
do you have your calcium reactor set really low? I dont know how those work...but wouldnt there be a chance of raising your calcium way to high if your demand is not very high yet?

I have had a goby jump into my overflow. Also while in QT it tried to jump out. I have heard wrasses jump too but no personal experience with them...

wrasses tend to have a more vertical orientation than other fish from what I have seen. Must have something to do with their hunting or defense mechanisms.

I've had fish jump out of the tank because of aggression. I also lost one once to a kalk malfuction turning the tank white:(.

None of my reactors are turned on yet. I am currently dosing until the controller comes. This is what I do know...when I took off the volcano reactos and did not dose for JUST 2 days I had one coral RTN to the base and had about a third of my coraline along the back pane turn white. I also noticed several corals looking stressed. That was just 2 days. That tells me either my calcium and kalk reactors were barley hanging or I didn't know how to set them up or combo of the two.

So I decided I would error on the side to big this time. Plus, you have to remember that my tank will get packed at some point and the demands will be ultra high in a couple years from now. That's why I chose a reactor combo that probably could handle 2000 gallons.

Jon, I think your right on the wrasses. Its in their DNA to jump. Idiots.

i need to do some more research on reactors, controllers, and monitors....they all sound scary to me. I have read to many stories of them miss reading parameters, dosing too much, or too little. But yet every nice tank setup has all of them....so i must be missing something?

is it that when your systems need become so great, that it would require so much dosing that people decide to use reactors? Because right now dosing seems so much easier and controled to me!

you can always add more dosers!

The real reason is for pH control and minor elements. Using the balling method can be limiting in that you would only be dosing certain elements, but using a coral bones type calcium media would add a whole lot more.

But I will admit that on my next system, I may try an expanded balling method.

Sweet reactors...My CopperBand got stuck in a rock on the edge of my overflow. I am still bitter about that. He was a real good eater and kept aptashia under controlll.
