Nice tank, to say the least.

Here is my own thread. Living with red bugs anything I am going to say here is covered there. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showt...25&pagenumber=1

I am comming to the conclusion that I am retarded when it comes to taking pictures because mine never come out that good.

Imagine the uproar it would cause on RC if a TOTM was living with Red Bugs....

I can see you have been through the ringer a few times by more then a few people for your choices, I highly respect you for sticking to your guns. "They say" it's good to be different, sure isn't easy though.

blstravelar, if you want info, do the legwork. Stop being lazy.

Tegastes acroporanus

Do a google search. Theres plenty of papers out there.

To date, I am not aware of any published scientific reports and/or data that concludes that red bugs are harmful to acropora corals. I respect opinions by Julian Sprung, Eric Borneman, Dustin Dorton and other expert aquarists, but to date, I am unaware of any scholarly articles based on scientific data that prove as a scientific fact that red bugs will harm and/or kill acropora corals if left untreated in the home aquarium.

"It has been theorized that red bugs are either a parasitic form of copepod or micro-amphipod, though very little research has been done and their true identification is not complete at this time.[Moreover] it has been speculated that the crustacean feeds off of the slime and waste products produced by the Acroporas." - Source: Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department at Drs. Foster & Smith, Inc. However, whether or not these "theories" and "speculation" will be validated by scientific data is still yet to be determined.

In the meantime, I think it is up to each individual hobbyist to determine what is in the best interest of his or her own reef by deciding whether or not to treat acropora corals for red bugs as opposed to picking sides and trying to convince others what they should do when scientific data and long-term treatment ramifications are still not known.

Thx

There was a recent TOTM that did have RB's but it wasn't ever mentioned though. If you don't know who don't ask because I am not going to be responsible for people ?ing that person.

Here is a little food for thought.

We know that corals feed on bacterioplankton and utilize a good percent of bacteria in their diet.

Cross that with this quote from R. Shimek

he actual food gathering mouthparts are within the blunt orange ventral process off the head, and are rather "paddle shaped" maxillae used for mucus scooping.

And This fromEric B.

Mucus provides a nutrient broth of lipids, amino acids, sugars and other compounds that, in turn, provide abundant sources of carbon and nitrogen for microbes.

He is refering to the mucus that sps make.

Now is it possible that these red bugs want that food ? How are they eating a coral if their mouth is a scoop? Wouldnt they have teeth or some means of actually ripping the flesh off an acro?

Good point clrkwrk.. Anyone have a bali slimer with a heavy population of these guys?

My tort doesnt slime that much and neither do my Milleporas.. But I bet green slimer would be a picnic if this is what they are after..

I have a Humilis that seems every time i have gotten a piece with RB's on it.. They dart to it.. and it slimes big time if i take it outta the water

I would thing they would stay away from the super super slimy ones because it might be like a death trap get caught inthe thick mucus and get eaten by the coral as part of its diet. As we all know RB's are smaller than cyclopese .

no offense everyone... but only Menards tank can be described as AWESOME... the rest can be described as possibly having stunted growth and color depletion. Listen.. weve gone over this,,do what you feel good about. All I know is my corals are happier since I treated

So can you explain how I have stunted growth and color depletion ?

Also of course your corals are going to be happier when they live in a sub optimal enviroment and you get rid of a minor stressor .Also if you followed the treatment then of course they will be happier with the large waterchanges and usage of carbon.

I think clkwrk's avatar is amazing and awesome in itslef, let alone his tank, pretty sure beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Regardless of that poknsnok I checked out your gallery, what type of skimmer is that you have a picture of, it looks like the DAS one I have, I haven't seen to many since I purchased mine years ago but it's a great skimmer, just wondering if it was the same DAS skimmer I use? I actaully just read today that it's an originaly Deltec design liscensed to DAS for production and sale.

If it is a DAS skimmer where did you pick it up? I have been looking for a good source of parts if I ever need them, knock on wood.

 Sorry I just changed it here is the full pic that you are refering to.

SUCH A NICE PIECE!!!!!!

Did you get it that way or did it color up to that under your lighting? I see you use the 14K DE, how long is your photo period?

its a deltec 701

clkwrk.. you think everything is about you.. that said.. all your corals seem small compared to menards... you cant hold a candle to those corals.. Also.. how do you know my corals live in a sub optimal enviornment?? Have you broken into my house,,, AGAIN??

I think there is something to be said about the fact that clkwrk's corals are small and doing very well. I have seen a few people say that if you have red bugs that small corals and frags are the first to feel the effects.

I take that as a positive sign in my tank. One of the frags I got when I did the group buy in which I believe I got the Red Bugs has done very well and is now fully encrusted and I would say I have had it just under a month.

It, to an extent, proves that the size of the coral does not matter.

Figured it might be a delted, nice skimmer.

Nope not at all but mine was mentiond as awesome so when you said none but Menards was awesome you put me into the mix.

I have had many of my colonies for 2 yrs + some only a year of course menards 6 year old tank has bigger colonies. But I have grown most of my colonies from small pieces or frags and that takes time . I don't think the size of my acros counts against color and health.

Dude why is it you have to come into every red bug thread to bash me and you always say I don't wanna start trouble.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder .

So I will accept that may tank is crappy to u.

Maybe yours is better ? You say in another thread your params are the same as his.
