Nova Extreme t5 question

I know this topic has been covered a million times, but i have a question about the 36 inch nova extreme t5 unit? Can i put the individual icecap reflectors on this unit, is it worth it? and any other opinions are welcome. I am pretty set on t5 because of the price, but dont have enough to shell out for an aquatinic right now especially since they dont even come with bulbs. Thanks

it's a fine fixture.

i have the 48" and it does the job for what i wanted it to do. now, that said, there are better fixtures out there that outperform the nova several times over - if you want to pay for them. everyone's sold on the fact that indovidual reflectors are THE way to go when they're not. just like all the new fads out there, one day it will be popular for eveyone to jump off the bridge - and they'll all follow...

no the ind. reflectors really make the T5s shine, you might as well just get PCs without them. Two T5s with ind. ref. will out-perform 4-5 t5s without them, maybe even more. Maybe a 2 t5 retro would work. I would just wait and save up.

yes you can put individual reflection on the nova emtreme. I saw a thread on here about 2 weeks ago with some guy putting them on his.

Ok, thanks, I think that is he route that I will probably go. My lfs who is a personal friend has one of these on a tank and it looks pretty good with softies, and some lps, which is about all i plan on doing, i am in college and wont really ever be able to bring myself to spend $400 on a light

i asked the same question as to adding individual reflectors to current usa and they said that there isn't enough room in the fixture to do it, i would save up and get the solar flare from aquatinics if i were you.

The solarflares are only for 48" tanks. I am looking at maybe getting one at the end of the summer if i can put some money away, just try to save some money which is a lost cause in this hobby

Not true, the PAR numbers clearly show that high quality individual reflectors make a tremendous difference.

That seems hard to believe if you still wanted to run all 4 bulbs. The bulbs on the Nova Extreme are mounted right next to each other and there would be no room to install high quality relectors for all 4 bulbs.

WHat? do you think i would just make that up....

The Ice Cap or any other high quality parabolic reflectors are about 2" wide each X 4 bulbs equals a minimum of 8" of space required to properly use the reflectors for a 4-bulb fixture.

The entire Nove Extreme fixture is only 7 1/4" wide, and the area for the lights is only 5 1/8" wide.

I suppose someone could have bent up the reflectors and squeezed them in, but it seems silly to me to spend all that extra money for individual reflectors for a fixture like that and then jerryrig them so they will not work as intended.

well not everyone has $400 to buy a high end fixture. The nova will work fine for just about any coral besides SPS.

good ole RC.

have you doubters used a nova, let alone even seen one in real life?

T5's without individual reflectors are still very effective and efficient for lighting, much more so than PC's. Even without individual reflectors there design allows more light to get to the tank than PCs. They run cooler than PC's. They have a much better bulb selection than PC's.

Do individual reflectors help, heck yeah they do. But since when is everyone keeping SPS, and since when does everyone have a large tank where there are plenty of options? As was mentioned, not everyone has $400+ to drop on lighting.

How's going to point out that nova's actually have a fan in them...do tek's? nope, and there have been output tests showing that active cooling can increase output by 50%. The nova's may not have the fan power necesary to increase output by that much, but it's something to think about.

Nova's are great cheap little lights... Current is as cheap as you can get when it comes to lighting. I run them on my 20g SPS nano and have coloration that rivals the best. If I had tek retros, maybe the coloration on my acros would be better, maybe not...but the nova gets the job done no question....If I went with the tek's I'd have a butt ugly canopy on my tank as well.

People that know me know I am not cheap, in fact I am what many consider a reef snob. Only the best for me, but at the time and currently there arent many good 24in t5 only complete systems... I didnt purchase my nova for the price, or the quality lol.

My softie/lps tank is a 55g with a 4 bulb 48" nova fixture. The factory bulbs are now 18 months old. Im still not having any issues with acans, frogspawn, brains, zoos, or fungia all on the bottom of the tank.

I agree these arent top of the line fixtures, but they have done very well for my softies/lps so far.

The thing about the lights with individual reflectors are their width. The Nova extreme fits on my 55 gallon tank. anything bigger would have hung over the front and back. I like the way it looks and so far im happy with the quality of light it produces. I will keep enjoying it until I can afford a bigger tank with a bigger more powerful light to match.

um 2/3 the money for 1/3 the output sounds like a deal to me

Not!

no both the 4 bulb tek and the aquatinics would fit over your tank

the simple fact is that this is a decent fixture for the money. it's not the greatest thing out there and everyone that agreed that the nova is decent all said the exact same thing. no, individual reflectors cannot be used correctly in this fixture - the diameter ratio of the bulb to reflector isn't right, so you don't get the punch. i've even heard that if you install the slr's incorrectly, you can actually reduce the light output than what it would be with the nova's big reflector. personally, i wouldn't attempt it.

most people here on this board and in this hobby are followers and will never be leaders - never do anything different - never even try. my rant goes far beyond this fixture alone and can touch on all kinds of other topics relating to this hobby.

brettfox - the choice is yours - you can go high dollar and get what you pay for with very nice equipment or you can go less than high dollar and not get the best, and still do ok. for softies and lps and even a good majority of sps, you will be fine with a nova, and your colors will look fine and your growth will be fine. with a tek or solarflare, your growth, colors and all will be great.

depends on your definition of decent is for me quality and efficiency are key.
