I was so sick of buying these $6 chocolate chips stars that were only 2-3" across. They lasted 5 days tops. So I had a local guy pick up the biggest, cheapest seastar he could find at the L.A. wholesalers.... :D

What are you going to buy it for Thanksgiving?

 Maybe each one will get its own...

Thats awesome. Lemme know if they eat it in time before it starts to break down. I got mine a star pretty similar to that and it started melting before they were finished.

So do they eat it alive, or kill it before they start there meal..

They eat it alive. When I first got mine my girlfriend loved them. Needless to say that only lasted until she found out what they ate.

A friend tank sitting my tank once gave them one of those big red knobby African stars. Even when it was literally in pieces, it didn't seem to melt. I'll let you know how this one goes....

I've heard of people keeping stars in their sump or another tank and just cutting off "arms" to feed the shrimp.

I don't have harlequin and may never keep them - but is there some reason to not do what I described above (other than you have more $$ than you know what to do with so you can afford buying starfish all the time :))

Typically, one starfish of decent size will keep the shrimp content for 2 weeks. So $5 every 2 weeks isn't all that bad, considering most people spend that much on one cup of coffee per day.

I don't know about other people, but my shrimp eat stars rather quickly. Furthermore, I'm not a fan of those people that go 2 weeks before adding another star. While a suppose the shrimp will survive, 2 whole weeks without a single speck of food is a bit long, IMO. So, the whole rotating/cutting arms off thing would only work with a very large number of stars. They don't grow legs that fast. That also means adding lots of food to the tank to feed the stars...
