NttH, 1st post: Best print magazines and books available?

I read plenty of articles and blogs online (glad to have finally joined this community) and as much as I get out of them I still prefer print. I'm a relatively new aquarist (>2 years w/ freshwater) and am looking to make the jump to saltwater/reef eventually.

I've done some searching on this site, keywords included 'books' and 'magazines' but I didn't quite find what I was looking for.

After research elsewhere it seems some of the top magazines available are Coral, Advanced Aquarist, FAMA (stopped producing print a few years ago :(), and Reef Keeping (reefcentral's own?). I'd like to hear y'all's opinions on these before I actually go out and get a subscription. Which are the best for quality content, helpful photos/diagrams, current events/issues, and feature respected individuals in the field?

As far as books go I don't know where to begin. At least with some of these magazines I can get a feel for their style by reading free released articles.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Narrow Sea Fish here looking forward to learning about and discussing the hobby with you all!

I always recommend The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robert M. Frenner. Two others I like are The New Marine Aquarium by Micheal Paletta and Natural Reef Aquariums by John Tullock.

I also suggest you read ALL of SETTING UP: HOW TO! Comprehensive list of articles for the newbie aquarist! These articles are some of the best sources for information out there and are kept up to date.

Once you've plowed through all that you should have a much better handle on the hobby.

Good Luck.

I like Coral mag, and they usually have a deal where you get a free trial issue to decide if you want to subscribe.

PaulB is has been a huge asset to this forum. He has a long thread about his 40 year old reef around here somewhere, and he recently published a book. You can buy it here https://www.createspace.com/5770995

Welcome!

Thanks, Engineer! I have seen Robert Frenner's book suggested elsewhere so I'm sure it's a great resource. Thanks for the link to that thread as well, great stuff!

Strickland, createspace also publishes the collaborative articles books for Advanced Aquarist if I'm not mistaken. And thanks for the mention of Coral Mag, like I said from what I've read they do come most recommended. Would be great if I got a free trial issue as well!
