O/T remodeling question for Kreeger or any one who knows

I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen and have a question about drywall. The house is about 35 years old and has the original POS cabinets. We are replacing the cabinets and on the two walls where they are, there is this fake brick paneling. When I pull this stuff off, the old glue is taking chunks of the paper off the old drywall underneath. The conbtractor I am working with says we should replace the drywall / apply new 1/4" Drywall over the old stuff. He wants to charge me $600 plus materials to do this. the 2 walls are 205 inches x 8 feet and 133 inches by 8 feet.

Is this a good price? I will be doing all the demo myself (removing the old cabinets first, then the paneling. This is in addition to the quote we received for the cabinets and their instalation.
FWIW, the guy were are using is my soon-to-be ex-brother in law. I never thought to check the prices he gave me, but a colleague mentioned that sounded high for the drywall.


Any input would be appreciated.

Usually buds do stuff like this on the barter system.....or for a case of beer and a steak dinner.

thats only 7 or 8 sheets of drywall sounds like way to much to me.
will only take you a few hours to hang that yourself. then ask him to finish for you if you can't do that.

Hang board is easy!Real easy if it aint ceilings!I might be able to help.(depends on when)I hung drywall for 7yrs but Im not the greatest at finshing but I can do it.Ive got all the tools and stuff for hanging.In construction that I worked in drywall was around .23cents a square foot to hang(pro)

well if it just 2 walls (dont know the price of drywall now ,but I charged $2.50-$3.50 depending on the openings windows doors ect.That was to put up and finish(walls no ceilings)materials and labor.so at $2.50 =$509 at $3.50=$893 labor and materials.I recomend 1/2 inch or 5/8.And those prices reflect the old 1/2,5/8 inch drywall.Thats for the correct size that needs to be in there.If it be my house 5/8 would be the choice.Even if the prices of drywall would have gone up 5x the $600 labor is way to much .You figure one day to put up and first skim coat .aprox 8hrs 2nd day 3hrs minor sanding and booger nock off.3rd day about 1-2 hrs fine tune and clean up.Unless there is something that I'm not aware of.

Thanks, all. I may take some of you up on your offer of help. Kreeger is going to help me out with this, but if we need some additional muscle, I'll reach out for sure.

Caesar- I think we're going to go over the old stuff, so that is why only using 1/4". Plus, 90% of these two walls is going to be covered by the new cabinets.

Funkyman- I'll check that out for this summers project, the master bath.

I had the same thing in my kitchen with some wood panneling and the glue. The guy I hired just repaired the walls with out replacing the drywall. I was impressed when it was done I was very skeptical that it could be done.
