Hey all,

Past 6 months have been a challenge. In mid-Nov my Dad had a Heart Attack and I walked out of the house within 10 mins of the phone call and came back home 9.5 weeks later when Mom & Dad were able to take care of themselves. Outside of a heater contactor that failed. The system went 9.5 weeks with a friend changing the Co2 tank on the Dastaco and a couple of people algae wiping so I could use the web cams to keep an eye on everything.

In January the Apex screwed me again (2x), and I had to hire someone to come pull dead colonies while I was taking care of my family. We lost almost 3 5g buckets of colonies from the main display tank alone. It took awhile to get over that loss emotionally because the only way I can avoid that accident from ever happening again is to build my own controller --- And that's one of my lock down projects.

Tonight I was just in the mood to use the camera.....

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, and also sad to hear about your fish tank. I remember when I left on spring break and the balcony door swung open and the breaker popped and I came back with the water starting to freeze. I can't wait to see what you come up with I still have you if those apex led chips that my friend in flag told about.

My controller is strictly on monitor mode except for light. I dont use it to control anything. Electronic and salt water environment is a time bomb waiting to crash your tank.

Dave sorry to hear about the difficulties in life and in the aquarium. Your perseverance has always been an inspiration to me and I am sure to many others. Hoping this year will be less trying.

Great looking pics of corals and fishes Dave. Sorry to hear about the tough times I hope things are better now!

Dave Sorry to hear about your Father and hope he is recovering well, I do not think everyone understands the commitment involved in Keeping a large system flourishing in the middle of your living room, when it flourishes it is what this hobby is about and is the Zen in Reefing. When it crashes it is a 400 Gallon reminder of all the what ifs, when I loose coral I cringe, when I loose fish I have cried. With that said spend any time you can with Pops and you are welcome to come raid my tank for chunks when you are back on track. I do not use any controllers to manage the life support of my tank with exception of redundant fail safes to shut off Chiller if Ranco should fail. My closed loops and return put enough heat in the tank that I do not have to run heaters because I have never found one that lasts. I think you should look into a heat exchange system similar to what Steve Garrett has on his outdoor system it is a closed loop through a water heater that runs heated water through a long loop in your sump when heat is needed. Much cheaper than electric and easy to manage and shut down if the tank starts to add too much heat. Much cheaper as well in comparison to Electricity in the Republic of California! Again hope your Father is recovering well and 10 weeks with friends keeping an eye on your system and it still has water in it is good, Phil would have killed everything in 10 weeks for sure on my system:)

Dave Glad to hear your father is recovering. I know your system will as well in your very capable hands. Like you I have had my apex kill just about all my SPS. I no longer rely on it for anything really. It did not even send me alerts like it should have when things went wrong! I love my old AquaControllers they were as reliable as a rock I used to say. The Apex has been a big disappointment. Luckily I did not sell all my AquaControllers.
