Ocean In A Box's Nano Reef Journal >>>PICS!!!<<<

It's looking good!

I have been looking into the procedure for drilling glass. The more I read, the less scary it seems. This assumes that you are talking the side glass. The bottom is likely tempered and not drill-able.

Alternately, I have a continuous siphon overflow that is not being used if you want to run a sump but don't want to risk the tank.

Ocean in a box,
I came over to see the progress on your awesome little project (well not very little actually) and was expecting to see at least a glass box in the hole! Not a TV in the hole :D

Hurry up dude, the suspense is killing me.

NEW SUMP

NEW SUMP

Got a great deal (I think...it was $40) on a sump/wet-dry from a LFS in my area b/c it was old, dusty, and the young workers at the store had no idea how to hook it up and said it had been sitting around there forever..they commented that it probably shouldn't even be sold w/ missing parts, but I talked them into it.

Actually, I don't know how to hook it up yet either...I think it needs some rain trays, pump for protein skimmer, and some sort of hookup for a HUGE bulkhead that's in the bottom corner side of it.

If anyone can look at these pics and help me understand how to hook up and configure this thing that would be great...I've never had a sump setup (all HOB type skimmers, etc in the past).

Also, it has three blemishes in the acrylic; I need some advice on what # weldon (is that what it is?) and the method to repair acrylic, if any of you out there are "experts". I'm not concernced about looks, just fuctionality.

Small crack around drain tube fitting of protein skimmer cup:

Small crack at top corner:

One I'm most concerned about, bunch of small, surface, impact-looking type cracks and it's near the bottom of the sump...you may not be able to tell from the pictures, but its definately on the surface & not "through" the actual acrylic:

Here are the rest of the sump pics from different angles:

That's it for now...I'll try to keep the pics (& the progress) coming steady. ;)

$40 is a steal; what store?

That cracking on the bottom scares me too. A little reinforcing via an acrylic sandwich might do the trick.

any firsthand experience in acyrlic repair and/or how to setup this sump?

Yeah, you & me both...I can't wait to put some water in this tank! ;)

Again, anyone who happens to read this...need help with:
- how to hook up this sump
- acrylic repair of sump
- glass drilling

These are the three things I have to tackle SOON.

Thanks again for reading, postin, & your comments.

Matt

To address your questions in order:

The sump will require a few things:
1) A path from the tank. This could be in the form of an overflow or drilling (sides, not bottom) and installing a bulkhead. I would recommend an internal overflow box to grab the surface water and a durso standpipe to reduce noise.
2) A return pump rated for the flow and turnover you desire and enough for the 4-5 foot lift to return the water. You can return over the top or by cutting another hole (or two) and can use lock line to direct flow.
3) As you stated, a pump for the skimmer. Find out the manufacturer and model number and contact them for a recommendation.

It is unclear from the pics if there is any sump area in there . It looks as though there is not.

The repair is best addressed in a sloppy but effective way. Literally "sandwich the cracking area with some decent thickness acrylic pieces that overlap the area by a decent amount of space. Thoroughly gluing each piece will provide support from the surrounding area and reduce pressure on the cracks. This will work fine as your filter will be hidden.

Drilling is alright with a little patience. You will need to know the exact size of your bulkhead and get a diamond hole saw (eBay is cheapest) that matches. There are a number of threads on RC that descrive the process. The keys are to keep it lubed by "damming" an area with an old cup or plumber's putty, going VERY slow and using no pressure. It will take 3-5 minutes to cut the hole. The Dremel method is a pain.

Hope this helps.

If you end up going with a 1" bulkhead, I have the hole saw for it. Let me know and I can come up 1 day and we can get her drilled. I have sucessfully drilled 2 tanks. Haven't cracked 1 yet. Just make sure that the sides are not tempered though. I saw a thread that a guy made a corner overflow from 1 of those plastic mail-boxes from Home-Depot. It turned out really nice actually. If you are ever down in my area, you can check out how I did my sump for my 30 gallon. The tank looks like crap, but the sump/refuge is working out great. As far as flow and return, most pumps that are suitable for this size will come with a 3/4" outlet. With a 3/4" return, under pressure, you want to make sure that the overflow can handle the gph. That is why I used a 1" overflow bulkhead for the overflow. If you need to talk further, pm me and I will give you my phone number and I can answer your questions to the best of my ability. Talk to you later, Joe.

if it is acrylic, you can simply get a small piece of acrylic, plexiglass, etc. from Lowes, Home Depot or a fabrication shop...get the same thickness as your sump...

You can then buy Weldon 16...cut the piece to size so that it is a square that will cover 1" minimum on all sides beyond the edges of the crack...make a 2nd piece the same size...smear 1 side of each piece with Weldon 16...put the pieces one on the outside & one on the inside...press together and hold them 24 hours with a few clamps...this should do the trick...

Hey Matt,
Just wanted to say "HI" from Racine. I just found your thread and you are doing want I have always wanted to do with a tank. I can't wait until you have all of us S.E. Wisconsin nano reefers offer for a drink in that new bar. I can't wait to see the progress on your tank.

1) have decided I want to drill my cube tank. i think 3/4"? Re: your suggestion on internal overflow, I was going to try an external durso, but I don't know how to make one...just saw one in this link: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1090486&perpage=25&pagenumber=3
Contacted Rich at http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ but he doesn't do externals I guess, said the one in the link must have been made by the thread author.
2) the really large size hole near the bottom of my sump I believe is to hook up a pump that would sit external to the sump and plumbe to it. My tank iS ~30g and the sump is ~20g ... so I'm looking for a nice, RELIABLE, value for the money EXTERNAL pump. Any suggestions anyone for 50g...what'a good turnover for the 30g tank...let's say 600g/hr?
3) pump for skimmer...have done everything I could think of to track down maker of sump/skimmer unit and can't find anything, no ph# to call.

So, measured everything hoping I could figure things out based on physical dimensions of skimmer: Skimmer tower 20 1/2 H, 6 inch diameter tube. outlet hole on inside of sump 1 inch OD, 3/4 inch ID, waste tube overflow 1/2 OD.
12 1/4W x 18H x 20 3/4L (3/16 thick acrylic)=19.8g volume
This is all I know -- don't know how to figure out what pump and hate to buy something that wouldn't work and be out the money.

3)...to clarify...this info must be pretty old and out of date...can't find anything current as far as how to contact this company. guess they're not in business anymore.

GrandeGixxer, Joe -
Thanks so much. When you say 3/4" you're talking inner diameter (OD=1 in then?) ? Thanks so much for the offer on everything. Actually think I have a carbide hole saw...or I'll buy one. I actually think I might enjoying trying to drill this tank. If it works...I have several other Ocean cubes I got at a Petco sale that might need drillin' too so I'll want to have the saw. ;)
