Oceanic 29 gallon skimmer

when using this skimmer should the filter be removed? the manual states that it should but i have seen a small video on youtube that a guy leaves it there. FYI I have replaced the Bioballs with live rock rubble

If anyone has pictures of there set up i would like to see.

I'm not trying to be a negative nellie here but I've heard from many people that the Oceanic skimmer sucks and is a waste of money and you'd be much better off with either a Tunze 9002 or a Sapphire in the 2nd chamber. As far as the rubble rock in the 2nd chamber...unless you're planning on doing a full refugium complete with chaeto and fuge light I'd take the rock out as it'll just end up being a detritus trap and cause you problems later! If I were you I'd take the rock out and upgrade my skimmer, you'll be glad you did. What ever you decide good luck and Happy Reefing!!!

I have a CPR SR3 skimmer in middle chamber. Still use filter frame. I cut my own filter pads to fit. They need to be changed frequently to maintain proper water levels. Skimmer seems to do a fine job.

I have heard good things about both of those skimmer, the one thing i like more about the SR3 is that you dont need to do any modifications to the hood.

Anyone have a link to where i can find one cheap?

I believe they are around $140 new but you could check eBay or the harware for sale section on this message board for a good deal on a used one.

the Tunze is the best skimmer you are going to get for the tank; I have on in my Biocube and have been more than satisfied

no, but I run a halide so I don't have the stock hood on it; you have to modify chamber two to make the collection cup fit, but other than that it fits snug in the second chamber and skims like a champ. You just have to make sure you keep the water levels constant

mksalt how do u like that 144 w light mod. I was lookin into that or the 108 kit with fuge light. Does that last bulb at the back fit nicely in the hood? Pros.. cons?

cool, well money is tight right now. Wish i could afford those Halide lights though. You got any pictures of your tank?

I like the upgrade. Doubles the light. All four bulbs fit nicely in the hood.

But you can always use more light.

To really keep SPS you need more. I have a little bit of everything in the tank. The SPS grow fine and encrust over the rock they are on. But the color just is not there. Digitata seem to do well though. Also Montipora do well.

I think I'm going to focus more on LPS.

The only negative is that the upgrade does generate more heat. I believe the skimmer also adds heat. Going to install an external fan to try to keep the heat in check. I will control it with a AC JR to kick on at around 80 deg. I experimented with a larger floor fan blowing into all three chambers and it definitely made a difference. also raised PH.

I have heard good things about the new saphire skimmers. I would like to have a fuge to tho. Would you recomend making the middle chamber into a fuge or puting a saphire skimmer in it.

sorry to hyjack the thread like this but its kinda topic related. I found this skimmer on nano customs and i want to see if anyothers thought puting it in the first chamber of the bio 29 would work. Then use the middle as the fuge. What are the deminsions of the first and third chambers on the biocube 29, sorry for the long threads but i might be buying one this weekend.
