Ochtodes Macro Algae

Hi everyone, my name is Steve, and im new to this forum.
I asked the members of the "upstate reef society" forum (New England States, esp. NY) about this algae Ochtodes, and no one seems to have it, or know much about it.

So thats why im here. Im wondering if anyone has experiance with this algae good or bad. Im also wondering if it will encrust or root into any of my SPS, thats what my tank is mostly.

Im not planning on using this for nutrient export, just decoration, to add some nice blue-purple color to my tank.

I would also like to know where i can purchase some. Perhaps someone on this forum has some they'd like to sell. I can hope all i want, but i doubt that anyone local to me has any, so shipping next day would be required. Or, another question for you guys, would this algae survive for 2 day or normal ground shipping?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

PS the algae i am refering to is pictured in the "Reef Invertebrates" book by Calfo and Fenner, on pg 71 and 88.

Hi S Helinski,

I looked it up in Caribbean Reef Plants by Littler and Littler and it is reported to grow in turbulent waters with good lighting. I have no idea where you could buy some. Have you tried searching RC for it?

Thank you for responding! I was wondering if the outsider (me) was banished or something....

I checked RC for it, and all that showed up was this thread, and the previous one i created for the local guys to me.

I have found one source, i think it was inland aquatics or something similiar. But i think it will cost me like $15 plus $40 shipping. Which im not sure if its worth it. Im not sure if i can make up that price by trading it in as it grows. However, the way it sounds, i would have a monopoly with it, as no one has come forward in my area about it, and i haven't seen it at the LFS's.

Any more info would be appreciated.

Ochtodes is common in some regions/hobby clubs and nearly absent (so far) in many others. Like Chaetomorpha, Gracilaria, etc... it just takes some time to get established. We've come a long way since the old days of access to Caulerpa species and not much more

Ochtodes can grow free/tumbling or attached (rather like Gracilaria). It can also be a nuisance if you have nutrient export flaws (too much) in your system (much like other desirabole and undesirable algae).

Neat thing about it too... it is only dark blue/purple when kept under dim/dark illumination and/or heavy blue colored lamps (fluorescent actinics). The brighter the light you give it... the lighter in color it is ... appearing maroon, burgundy or even dingy clear under bright warm halides. This is rather common with deeper water algae like some Rhodophytes - dark red under weak light and at depth, but yellow or light orange in shallow water under bright lights.

Hi S Helinskiki, I have posted a few posts about this very same algae. If you have any luck getting any will you tell me where you got it and how much it cost you, because i have been looking for it too, but I can't find it anywhere.

I'd be interested in obtaining this macroalgae (for my refugium) as well. I used to have it a long time ago when I started up my first reef aquarium. This macroalgae is quickly consumed by Tangs.

Thank you Mr. Calfo for taking time to respond. I had no idea that it could be other colors than blue. Thats what interested me in it in the first place.

Well im going to try to find a good source for it that wont bankrupt me. I don't feel like paying all that shipping for an algae, but i guess i could order more stuff as well.:rollface:

ndfootball5489, when i get some of this macro, i will post a thread on this plant and algae section about where i got it/ price/ how it shipped. That is unless i can find it locally.

Gary... You must read every forum on this server:eek2: Anyways when i get some, ill be happy to give you a chunk. That is, unless you get it first.
