Octo Extreme Skimmer KO Club

I just figured out what was wrong!

As above, the keyway on the PPW broke. The PPW would still spin which fooled me into thinking that wasn't the problem. I took everything apart again including pulling the PPW off and found the busted keyway. I replaced with my stock white PW and voila- it works again.

Thanks for the help guys.
Thanks for the responses. My PPW only lasted a couple of months before breaking. I didn't know that the area involved was called the keyway. I also went back to the white, stock pw but had to keep the skimmer in 11 inches of water to work effectively. I recently swapped the pw out for the mesh wheel that came with the skimmer and haven't gotten good results in 10 inches of water. If anything, the skimmer is more sensitive with the mesh.

WooHoo, the Extreme 160 with the BB2000 is nuts. This pump is a tank! And my favorite, no start up issues. I must have turned my skimmer on and off 10 times just to enjoy the fact that i can restart without giving the old sicce pump.

nice austin. get some pics when it breaks in, please.

what size system is it on?/

You too Inferno. How are you liking the cone? What skimmer did it replace?

I'm loving the cone, the head is already consistent and producing nice skimmate.

The EXT-160 was working great but the space under the tank with a 30 gal sump was tight and annoying to work on so I built a 40 gal breeder and bought the XP-2000 (fell in love with it when it came out, and had some extra cash) and installed both of them next to the tank. Check it out, However it is a work in progress, I still have a lot to do with it.

hi guys, i put the red devil needle wheel on Thrursday night and it has already pulled to cups of skimmate on my Octo 200 ext. Im very impressed with the performance and would def. recommend it to others.

i got the octo extreme 200 skimmer on my 90g and it isn't really getting a good enough head on it that overfills into the collection cup. pretty much all of the skimjunk just gathers on the wall of the skimmer at the top.

The tank is about 4 months old with 75lbs of LR and 4 fish.

skimmer is sitting in about 9-10 inches of water and the water level in the skimmer is about 1 inch above where the collection cup meets the skimmer body.

what the problem?

Sounds like your skimmer is breaking in still, how long have you had it running? Also try a little less depth and put the bubble level about an inch below the cup line. Doesn't sound like you have much of a bio load, do you feed a lot? Post up some pics of your sump/skimmer setup.

i feed once daily with frozen food, should i put the bubble line an inch below where it overflows into the collection cup?
Do you have a large bioload? Do you have a pick of the skimmer running? The waterline sounds a little high inside the skimmer? The bubble break should begin at the the bottom of the collection cup not the internal waterline. I would raise the skimmer so it's sitting in about 6 to 6 1/2 inches of water then try re-adjusting the water level.

yeah, you want the bubble line lower than the collection cup. Also raise your skimmer out of the sump another 2-3 inches for best performance. That skimmer is overkill for your tank though (a good thing) and won't make alot of skimmate through out the week. For it to pull alot of crap out you would need a heavy bio load (more fish and more feeding).

PICS!

i haven't adjusted anything on my skimmer yet. the head of my skim junk never overflows into the cup. it just's gathers on the sides.

You're bioload is light, the skimmer is definitely overkill. Raise the skimmer so it's sitting in about 6 1/2 inches of water (Use eggrate or something similar to make a little table that will raise and support the skimmer inside the sump). The amount of water the skimmer is sitting in now will not allow you to adjust the internal water level properly, causing no skimmate going into the cup adjusting in one direction to too flooding out the cup adjusting in the other direction. The same as jAustin indicated in his post. How long do you have the skimmer?

Hi guys. Have had some trouble with my swc extreme 200. Was in 10" of water and would mostly just gunk the neck of the cup. Moving it to 6.5". Stock msx pinwheel on sicce.

Should 6.5 " do the trick ? Light to medium bioload 90g + 33 sump.
Also, should I think about the red dragon or ppw? Just wanna get this thing running as it should. No room for a new bb pump.
