Octo Extreme Skimmer KO Club

Hey I also have a 160 and was wondering the same thing. My skimmate is very wet and light looking. I have to set the level at least a 1/3 of the way up the neck to skim anything. I have been hesitant to remove the long tube because I use it to deflect the microbubbles away from return pump. Mines been running a little Anyone have any advice?

Has anyone tried removing the pipe???

So I am waiting for my octo extreme to arrive in afew days and was looking at the PPW but after reading some of your post about problems I am hessitant. Is the only problems with this wheel when the pump is restarted? also for the people using this purple pin wheel does it do a better job than the stock pinwheel?

Ok thanks I have been reading this thred for a while but my ADD kicked in and had to just ask. I am planning on getting the large wheel and hope for the best. I feel like a little kid at christmas waiting for this skimmer to arrive.

As I mentioned above I took out the pipe that comes down from the elbow and put an elbow piece. I put some duct tape to make it fit a little more snug and drilled holes in it to relieve back pressure...

Here it is...

I put holes all around the elbow...

That's the pump starting up the wrong way. Its a problem with the Sicces. The volute is directional and the stock impeller only turns the right way. The PW/MW can turn either direction. ATB addresses this with a non directional volute. WM says they will be developing a PW impeller that only spins the right way.

Thanks... Just wanted to make sure this isn't totally out of the ordinary

Well the 160 is starting to pull out some nice gunk :eek2: Feed the fish/acans two days in a row, about 4-5 cubes in a 55 with 5 fish so that's a lot of food

Here's about 2-3 days worth of skimmate nice and smelly:bum:

what is the scfh with the factory pinwheel?, in gona drill a hole at the base so that the air line is not bent, will also be using shorter and stiffer tubing and the mesh mod.

I'll post scfh results later on today :)

Thanks. Ok i tried the mesh mod but the scfh didn't improve dramatically. I want to get 30 scfh .

With the mesh mod however the reading is more stabe, doesnt jump as much.

I might order the larger PPW since people are getting good results from it.

I'll have to wait till the mesh mod breaks in and see what happens with the skimmate.

what were your readings?? the RS white wheel has been @ the same for everyone.. 17scfh
Mesh should have been a big difference.. Hmm?? where is your bubble break set?
Can you post pic's?

I was talking about the difference between mesh mod and the small purple pinwheel.

The black dot is always jumping so its hard to get a good reading.

A meshed wheel should produce 30 scfh pretty easily. Three layers of flat back mesh trimmed about 1/4" beyond the plate.

you mean 1/4" more than the diameter of the plate?

If i make it any larger, it seems to be off balance, it has a tough time starting or is really loud.

I trimmed it the same diameter of the pinwheel and it's superquiet

It can take a few tries to make a decent mesh wheel & many times it will start hard or possibly require blowing into the airline to start. It's all about how far you want to push the pump to get the desired scfh. There's a few members who have had over 40 scfh from their mesh wheels.

wow :eek2: ...thats awesome, but isn't there a point where it's drawing too much air and not enough water making it less efficient?

Also a cone shaped riser would do a better job i think. the neck seems to be too wide on the octopus extreme 160, i could be wrong.

One thing that surprized me is that eventhough the mesh only works a little bit better than the PPW, its much quieter than the PPW, i dont know why but i'm lovin it :)

I'm guessing the mesh now will take a few days to break in? I will post first 24 hour picture here

Did you mean this thread or the older disconnected one?

Either way, im gona go back and read the whole thing. Thanks.

Are you saying that the cone shape wouldn't make any difference?

dang its 40 pages :rolleye1:

Where can you order the Purple pin wheel? I have the 160 with mesh and it is pulling about 35. Would like to try the other wheel.
