Octo Extreme Skimmer KO Club

Yea. ..no problem. When I was looking into getting the 250, some would say it would fit and then some people would say it would definitely not fit. I went ahead and got it and it "did" fit but not the best fit since it took up more than half my sump lol :). I let the skimmer last in that sump about a week it and it just didnt work for me, so I had to beg the wife to let me get a larger sump ;P. Everything works just fine now. I feel that the 250 is definitely over doing it on my 120, but I would rather have a larger skimmer than too small of one. Good luck with everything.

I'm looking into buying a new protein skimmer, I'm not happy with getting 3-4 ounces of somewhat dark skimmate daily from my AquaC EV-120. I am looking at purchasing the Octopus Extreme 200, does anyone have suggestions on whether I should stick with what i have or spend the $290 on a new skimmer? Will I see a big difference in the Octo Extreme from the AquaC?

Why do you wantto get rid of the das skimmer it is a great skimmer I run a das ex1 on my 60 cube and a extreme 250 on my 250 gallon and both are great skimmers

It IS a great skimmer, i am really happy with it and it keeps my N03 and PH4 undetectable on my 180. i recently took my Chaeto off-line and worry that the DAS EX-2 wont keep up ... That's why i have been thinking of going with the extreme 250. What do you think?

I personally would keep the das ex2 skimmer but that is me. Das skimmer is a good skimmer unmodded while extreme you need to get ppw to get it to work good and startup issues get old after awhile unlike my das which is true set it and forget it

I agree, but do you think its enough for a 180gal with no macro-algae??? The Octo Extreme are so sexy though lol.

IMHO..

Replacing a pin/w with a better performing one, is not modding .
I had no start-up issues when I ran pin/w's .

I agree, the das is a very good skimmer and the octx is not plug and play for beginners. It is however the best skimmer for the money! We don't need to "bash" others on this thread. We are here to help others. So please carry that "crap" to another place.

Hi Charlie,

I don't think the intent was at all to "Bash". I am posting in this forum because, from what i can tell, the Octo Extreme ROCKS! I'm trying to get info to see if i should upgrade from the DAS. It's rated at 250gal so I don't know if it would keep up with my 180 now that i have taken the refugium off-line. And I agree that replacing a pin/w is not a mod, its just an upgrade, IMHO.

Rickyrooz, I really liked my 200. IMHO, it can do 175-200g with new/pin/w. You will notice ALOT better performance over the aqua-c . (yes I ran one) As noted, the stock pin/w on the octopus is "not the best".. The MSX has a much better pin/w.. Octo has better warrentee.. it was a trade off. Other than pin/w they are pretty much the same, I bought a MSX pin/w and put it on my octx.

platax88, I never ran a DAS, but I have experiance with many deltec's. I loved the 702! My OCTX200 was as good at removing organics.
Sorry, I don't know much about the 250extreme. I was going to buy one, then the Hurricones popped up.
The hurricone is plug and play. Very quiet and powerful.

My reply was not aimed at you, the other guy "implied" that the octx would not perform, with out modding. And all of them have start-up issues. Both of those statments are un-true. And trash talk..

My Extreme 200 handles my 75 gal with 20sump and 20fuge, to the point where I wish I had a 150gal tank so I could see what this skimmer can really do.

Tang, I would have run the 200 on my 180.
The guy that has my old tank now, Run's a DAS 3 pump model.
( very nice skimmer)

The sicce pump only used @20 watts! (if i remember right)

Thanks, I was looking at purchasing the new purple pinwheel, is it hard to install? Any pointers on making it perform at its best?

If you have not bought it (skimmer and PPW) yet, have reefspecialty install it. It is Scary the first time, because your afraid of break something. :eek2:
The suction volute is somewhat hard to remove, because the "oring" holds it very snug.. but once you do it the first time you, are OK from then on.. I use the handles on my "kliens", inserted into tabs, to help me remove the volute.

skimmer setting in 7.5" (? -I believe) of water, turn pump sideways, replace air line with 3/8"id vinyl hose . (most hardware stores carry it)
Do not place output underwater, sicce pumps do not handle back pressure well..

Pump Startup Direction

Pump Startup Direction

I've seen a few references to this issue on thread.

How do I tell if the pump is running backwards?
I'm running a 160 with small ppw

Thanks

Sorry if I called upgrading to ppw a mod. But my intentions were if he replaced the das skimmer I would replace the originals with ppw from the get go

I also own a extreme 250 with extended neck and large ppw. I do get startup issues with the pinwheels where they do not startup I have fiddle with them to get them to get going. I only had these issues with the mesh wheels never with the cnc or original pinwheels.

In my opinion das and octopus are great skimmers and either would work on your tank.

If you took it I was bashing the extreme than that was not my intention but I do not see him upgrading a skimmer that will do the job pretty much equally

I just joined the club with this octo extreme 200 with the purple pin wheel. So far it seems to be working well for me.Here is a pic of the skimmer in action.

Rook-thanks for the tip (previous page)!

The only way my Octo 160 will fit in my sump requires it to empty into my return chamber, this is causing my whole display to fill with micro bubbles. is that just because the skimmer is brand new (it's only been running a couple hours)? will the bubbles go away in a few days or is there another option i have?
thanks
