Octo Extreme VS. Pro?

Whats a better skimmer? The extreme model or the pro? The pro costs a lot more (im assuming due to its pump?). So im questioning the pro 250 vs extreme 300.

thanks

I just bought a 300 pro , I haven't used it yet. From what I understand the Askoll outperformed 2 Sicces in a test Marine Solutions did on the cones. I would only assume the pump would work better in a standard skimmer as well???

I am real interested to use the skimmer and see the comparison of it against my BM200 I am removing. The BM200 has been rock solid for me, so I hope the Octo 300PRO performs.

The askoll should be better, the only thing is that the new askoll's pinwheel and volute are machined and supposed to be a lot better than the one included with the octo pro.

I had an Askoll running on an MSX250 for awhile. It pulled a similar amount of air as 2 x conservatively meshed Sicces. More than 2 x PW Sicces, less than a pair of aggressively meshed Sicces. Even though it pulled ~ the same air, it did so while pushing less water, so the air/water ratio was better.

The Pro Vs Extreme 300...you are comparing a skimmer with an 8" body to one with a 12" body. The Pro is being replaced (?) with the Hurricone which looks like a nice design.

I here the askoll 1500 even with the old pinwheel and volute pull 60scfh, thats some serious air. Do they sell the new volute and pinwheel seperately?

Even so, I am only working with 12 x 15 area in my sump, so other than a cone this seemed like the best choice.

I guess that depends on who "they" are. There are several companies making volutes and pinwheels. The one I got I think...is from and Octo Pro (I bought it used).

Time will tell who is making the best volute and pinwheel, I guess I will wait and see before buying anything different from the one it comes with.

Below is some info from a supplier in Canada, who basically said Octopus had to lower the rating for capacity due the askoll 900. So it looks like the extreme 300 would be able to handle a much higher bio-load. Hope this helps, I too have been trying to figure out what to get over the past few days.

"The Pro 250 was the first release of the Octopus Pro line of skimmers. When it first came out they were hoping it would skimmer up to 300g but the pump was not sufficient, hence why it is now rated to 185g. The Pro 250 comes with a Askoll 900 pump, while the Pro 300 comes with the Askoll 1500.
You will notice that some sites are still rating the PRO 250 at 300g while others are rating it to 185g. Some sites are better at updating their products than others. "

this may not be a fair comparison, but i just sold my xtreme 160 for the for a pro 250 ver1 which didn't come with a askoll pump. kept my sicce from my xtreme and put it on the pro.

ran the pro /w a sicce CV PW, there was too much water heading into the body. too turbulent to provide a stable skim unless the water line was mid way into the cup neck . feeding caused the foam head to die instantly.

pro /w MW(needs a remesh), seems to have a good air/water ratio, water line was at bottom of the neck. pulled out at least 5x the amount of dark skim vs the PW. I could raise the water line half way into the cup and still have a steady stream of tiny bubbles traveling up the neck.

IMO the pro's body is definitely a better body design. I'm assuming the new 300 /w the askoll pump will outperform the xtreme series. If I didn't get a steal on the pro 250 ($175:eek1: ), I would have upgraded to the xtreme 300.

guess my main point is if you go xtreme, go mesh. if you want hassle free, go pro.

BLANENSHIP76-post apic of your volute. I get about ~85 from my askoll 1500 with the old volute PW, its plenty good.

Reefer08- what size tank is this going on? I wouldn't buy a Pro 250 new, and if you can, get the 250 extreme not the 300. I'm not a fan of mesh, thats why I ended up with a octo pro 300, but with the 250 extreme you can run PWs, just depends on tank size/bioload.

I am getting my my 300PRO tomorrow, I will post pics of the volute and the skimmer when I get it unwrapped.

Just put the ATi BM200 in its goodbye vinegar bath (Has been a great skimmer for me absolutely no complaints!)

why is the pro 250 so small? I would have though they would be 10 inch body. octo extreme 250 pro vs 250 extreme still not sure which to get

I think it boils down to the pumps not the actual size of the skimmer.

2 sicce pumps on the extreme will perform better than 1 askoll 900.

Everything else about the skimmer would be pretty much the same as far as performance goes. So it boils down to 2 sicces with mesh wheels, or askoll 900 with a pinwheel. The common concensus is that 2 meshed sicces will significantly outperfom 1 askoll 900 w/pinwheel.

Here are the pictures of my Askoll 1500, I just got my 300pro in the mail today. How high of water do your in yours in??? Right now, I have it in 8 inches of water.

No I sure don't.

I am having a ton of trouble with it overflowing the skimmer cup even when wide open, I guess 8 in of water is too much???
