Odyssea light caught fire

The MH light that I always say I never had a problem with caught fire today. The capacitor melted and started to smoke/burn-Thank goodness I was at home. I was able to smell the problem and unplug the unit.
I replaced the burnt capacitor and the other working one with replacements from City Lighting. The replacements are quality and encased in metal. The ones in the unit were not and were plastic.
I called about 20 electrical supply places for these and City Lighting was the only place that carried them. I bought the last two but more are on order. If you have one of these fixtures I suggest you open it up and see if they are a plastic POS. I believe this also happened to Chad-GWA
The product # is
Magne Tek
Capacitor
16 MFD 300VAC
005-1498-BH
Made in the USA

I got a contractor price of $9 If anyone wants to replace these I can get the parts and it is a 5min DIY job that gives piece of mind

Hey Phil,

How is the Hatch ballast working out? For a second I thought it was the one that caught fire!

I will be replacing that tomorrow.

thanks for the numbers and name

make sure you soldier it with-out a cold soldier joint

that hatch ballast is A++++ Much better than my icecap 150 mh ballast. JMHO If you ever come across any more of those outdoor fixtures I would be interested. It was alot of work switching the previous funky base, but well worth it.
I do not know what a cold soldier joint is-but I used my soldier gun and wrapped it in electrical tape. It is cool to the touch when on

Yes it did happen to us.

Smelled like beef jerky, lot of smoke, and one toasted capacitor.

mmmmmmmmm.........beef jerkey............

One of these days I will be converting the 70W unit to a double ended fixture. Too bad we can't get the little T6 lamps in aquarium colors! They are nice and compact!

Hopefully the 70W double ended lamps are short enough that I can clip the sockets directly onto that reflector.
