Borb

Borb

Just picked up a small borb ~2" this last Saturday. It's been acclimated and added to the DT which also has 1.5" clown, 2" yellow spotted goby, two blue/green chromis both < 2" .

When I added the borb it swam to the bottom and went into a cave. I know it's a shy creature but how long would you guys say til it gets brave enough to come out? I know it's watching...I can see it poke it's head out the hole with its eyes scanning around and when it spots my big ol head it ducks back in. I've spot fed it some brine shrimp 2x and ate them. So I'm glad it's atleast taking some food offered to it.

I hope it comes out soon so I can closely examine it more and feed more often.

i just got my borb on saturday too, hes about 2-2.5" after i acclimated him and everything he instantly perched near my overflow at the output nozzles(thats where my mated clowns host and they were NOT happy). at first he would not eat pellets and only frozen PE mysis shrimp(that i soaked in garlic just to get him going) and at that he would only eat it if it happened to float right in front of him. and im sure my yellow tang swimming up to him and battering him with her tail spines wasnt helping him feel welcomed either..... now tho hes getting a bit more adventurous and leaving the overflow for a much better suited larger cave when he needs a spot, hes been swimming out in the open much more. he LOVES mysis but has started taking the elos sv pellets that the rest of my tank loves so much. now when my tang tries to go for him he puts her in her places and she leaves him alone now. they tank a little time but they will get there. i have a yellow tang the borb a pair of mated black ice clowns and a bicolor pseudochromis(my girlfriend chose him lol) plus assorted inverts, LPS and SPS.

here he is this morning before the lights came on

Do people have long term success stories with these fish? I mean years and years? They get quite large from what I've seen, and I'm wondering how those large fish do over time....

Need to get a better camera and upload more pics. Mine has that idiotic 2 second delay and these fish don't stay anywhere for 2 seconds! Both have nearly doubled in size already and are acclimated well. They "beg" for food at the glass and get along with the other 4 inhabitants; a breeding pair of jawfish and mated pair of mandarins

The face down swimming is just something they seem to like doing sometimes. Nothing to do with their swim bladder. I was worried about that, as well, when they first arrived. It was just the male, at first but the female does it occasionally now, as well

nice! lucky for you, your fish stay out in the open then. Mine just hide in its cave in the back of the tank, til it sees the tip of the baster. For now it prefers brine shrimp over mysis. It eats like a pig and when its full it turns its back into its cave and perches sideways. Ive only had it for about 2 weeks now, I hope it'll grow a pair soon and explore the tank more.

They really are a very colorful fish (visually and characteristically). It say they're a bit more comical than my clown.

I'm retired, so have the time to do it but will probably work on a smaller scale, as well. Whenever I add a new fish to a tank, I feed a small amount of food; just a pinch on the tip of a chopstick, every time I walk by the tank. In no time, they associate you; and even the sound of your approach, with food. That small an amount, none reaches the bottom and has never affected my water quality and quickly socializes any new additions. The fish in my reef tank are so tame, I can catch them with my hand. It has made feeding my anemones a bit of a pain, since all 4 fish in there attempt to snatch the silversides out of my hand but that's a small price to pay

Great tip! I would love to give em little snacks, maybe ill try a piece of mysis on a stick.

I saw my little fella out swimming cautiously in the open while the nightlights were on and I was on the couch. As soon as I told my wife to go look he darted back into the cave. Sneaky fella. Atleast I know hes getting braver :uzi:

he will come too. my guy was as timid as could be and now he thinks he owns the tank. ive trained him to eat pellets with the rest of my tank and once a week i feed mysis soaked in fresh garlic, selcon, or the elos vitamins. he is a VORACIOUS eater. i can hear him eat from the other room haha

a bit of an update. my little fella has begun what looks like a hunting behavior when the lights turn off. so ive taken this opportunity to just broadcast feed em instead of spot feeding as I do durring the day.

what pellets do you use to feed em? ive only got spectrum pellets (the tiny ones) which i used to feed my clown and chromis (before I sold em).

Would you recommend the elos or fauna marin pellets?

i have both, have never tried feeding him the spectrum pellets. but i use the elos svm2. i would start them on vitamin enriched or garlic enriched mysis first and just get him eating regularly. and mix pellets in. and then slowly do less mysis and more pellets till its no more mysis. i only like feeding that as a weekly treat for the fish to switch it up for them

so you only feed mysis as a weekly treat? I've got Elos coming on the way. Mine eats mysis like a champ sometimes two three pieces at a time. Hes nice and plump. It's also good that he stops eating when full unlike many other fish that will eat til their stomachs burst :/

But I will try feeding less mysis. And particular daily schedule that you recommend?
