Official Borbonius Anthias Thread

Thinking of getting a single for a 300 gallon reef. But I do have other anthias like dispars, and plan on getting some carberryi and resplendent. I've only seen other species of anthias mentioned a couple of times in this thread, only two people with experience (lyretails and ventralis). Are they generally fine with other smaller species of anthias?

Slief, where did you get your beautiful borbs? I live in Calabasas and would love to know your source. I love the colors on your guy.

I got mine from a Garvey Fish & Pet in Rosemead. They are seasonal and they don't have a phone number that works. Or at least they didn't in December. I got wind that they had some and went down there. When I got there, the last two they had were sold. They called me the next week to tell me they had more coming in. I went down there the Sunday they arrived and picked up two of them that they sold me really cheap ($80 each) because of the inconvenience of coming down there once already. They also didn't acclimate then to their tank as they were still in the bags from the supplier. They were bringing them in from overseas and picking them up at the airport with the rest of their shipment. I took a chance and put them directly into my display. One of the two dissapeared the next day but this one has been doing great and eats so much, it looks pregnant. It eats pellets, mysis and LRS Fish Frenzy & LRS Reef Frenzy. My tank is fed 3 times a day so he is definitely benefitting from the multiple feedings.

The Borbs can get up to 6" but as far as I know, they are generally shy and not agressive. I have a few other Anthias in my tank. I don't remember what kind they are but all the Anthias get along fine. The Borb has his place in the tank and generally stays in one area. He doesn't mingle with any of the other fish but has no issues getting into the feeding frenzy even with my big tangs. Once he's fat and happy, he settles back into his place in the tank. They do grow fast though. In the 3 months since adding mine, he has just about doubled in size and girth.

Thanks, Slief! I may have to be patient. I see one on LA DD but it is $299. I really want it but that is pretty steep. NY Aquatics has some too but they don't have pics.

This is the beginning of the season where they are more readily available

Reading this thread, it seemed like December was the beginning of the season, and I missed my opportunity for the year. I'm hoping the season continues, and I can get a couple of these guys.

I've had several Borbs in my tank within the last 5 years. My sources are instructed to bring them in for me at under an inch with the smallest I have ever received being .75” in length. As it's a smaller tank I keep them until they get "too big" which is around 2", as I like my fish on the smaller size. I typically sell them to other local reefers or my favorite LFS. They get the benefit of having a qted and conditioned fish that is guaranteed to eat and doing great in a tank. I've only lost one in the past but I believe it was a decompression issue since it had noticeable buoyancy issues.

They have always quickly moved from mysis to pellets as food. They get a varied assortment depending on the day of the week but they generally have never had issues with feeding in my experience. I currently have 2 in my system with the larger having been with me for almost 1.5 years and the newest much smaller one having been added to the tank last month after being purchased at the Divers Den facility when I visited last month. There was initially some chasing but now they swim together and are doing well. This is the second time I have had two in the tank together. My previous pair arrived in the same shipment after being caught together by my LFS’s diver. They were QT and conditioned together and there were never any issues with aggression. They were split up when sold.

I have t read every page of this thread, but I thought I'd post about my two borbs.

I've had them for a little over two months now in quarantine and both eat very well.

The larger of the two appears to have a swim bladder issue as he tends to float more than the other fish. Are there any remedies to this issue, it appears to have gotten worse as of late, I was hoping he'd outgrow it.

Better to ask this question in the disease section of the forum? Figured there might be a borb owner or two that had dealt wit this issue.

Quick question I've kept quite a few Borbonius over the years but I recently aquired one that has more pinkish spots than brown spots ( Like I've always had). Is the coloration because they were collected in a different area.

I didn't think anything of it till the new one was added to the display and the color pattern is noticable different.

Thanks for the explanation.

I had Brook or Velvet rip through my tank last year, needless to say I lost my beloved Borb. I am halfway through restocking my tank and I am getting super itchy to get another one. After skimming through this thread again I am seriously thinking that I want a pair.
Those of you with pairs how is that going?
Hey Red (Tiapan) if you're still following this thread.... nudge nudge... wink wink!

I have a pair and they do fine together. I did add them at the same time, which I usually do with any paired fish. Four years now and no problems

Any have pics of bigger sized borbs? I have kept 1 or 2 over the last 5 years and each only lasted about 2 years for me. I am dreaming back to the days that I saw my first borb in a lfs. It was huge as in maybe 4plus inches with awesome color but wasn't eating. This was in my early reefing days. I don't recall if he ever made it to someone's tank or if he perished in the store but I usually only see small ones offer on line and in lfs. How big is your biggest borb and show us a pic illustrating its size. It's an awesome fish and I say u can't have too much of a good thing. Any large borb pics out there ?

I have 2 in two different setups. Thought about combining them in another one of my tanks. They're pretty tiny. I'll post them once I set up a photobucket.

Any pics of borbs 4 inches or greater out there?

There is a LFS in San Diego called Shipwreck Cove that had 2 huge 6"+ borbs in his display tank. One recently perished though. He also has a huge gem tang in the same tank. I'll take a pic next time I'm there. I grabbed this pic off the internet from yelp but you can see how big it is here. Click on the pic to see it bigger.

He's also one of the cheapest I've seen for a gem tang, I think he was asking $1300 at one point.
