the worm was probably trying to relocate for some reason or another- perhaps a lack of food. Smaller aquariums don't usually generate enough plankton (on they're own) to keep such a worm well fed, so unless you were dosing phyto I suspect it was searching for greener pastures.
 
I'm sure you're right Gary. Phyto was actually on my LFS list.... The first one moved, then this happened within a couple days. I think something must have changed in the nutrient levels in my tank because the worms were looking great and growing up until then. The one that moved is settling in and re-growing it's crown (in the back of the tank :( ), so I'm off to get him some phyto!
