ojonas JBJ 28g build thread

sorry for your loss :( but very kind of the shop to give you a coral for free..

Maybe it was just bad luck? But really strange for them to die at the same time with no water problems.

Yes, I thought so too. And all of mu inverts are still alive (snails, hermit crabs, pom pom crab and two shrimps). Those are usually the first to go when the water is going bad.

Unfortunately it seems like it will be another week or two before they will get any new semi Picassos in. After having those I want to have the same again.

One of the really good things from this though is that my tank seemed to have completed its cycle and the water parameters have settled in and became stable. Should be ready for stocking up on some stuff now. Here are my proposed stock list:

  • 2 semi picasso clowns
  • Clown Goby with paired candy pistol shrimp
  • ORA purple Dottyback
  • Flasher wrasse
  • Serpent seastar
  • 1 GBTA
  • 1 RBTA
  • Porcelain crab

Probably add either the wrasse or the Dottyback the last. Once the GBTA and RBTA has settled in I will start populating more heavily with corals, mainly SPS. Probably no softies this time except for a few Zoanthids and mushrooms.

Here are pictures of the first corals of the new tank. Just need to figure out placement now.

Id use caution adding the dottyback considering all the shrimp and crabs. I know there are plenty of success stories but there are a bunch of horror stories too. I added a diadem dottyback a while ago and it started showing way too much interest in my cleaner shrimp. It would practically lay on top of it and quiver and shake its tail. Other times it would just stalk it and stare at it like it was about to charge and take a bite out of it.

I love the colors of the dottybacks but I love my shrimp too much to risk it. Not saying don't get one but I'd definitely watch it closely if you do. I ended up adding a royal gramma to add some of that bright yellow and purple swimming around without risking losing any inverts.

chad p: I had a dottyback in my previous setup and had no problems with him. He did not bother anyone in the tank and since I loved how he moved around in the tank and the deep purple color I would like to have one here again. Did not know they could eat shrimps since my shrimps are almost twice as big as the fish when fully frown.

Did visit my LFS last night mainly to chat and to see if they had another clown pair that I liked. They did not have any ones I liked so I put my name up on a list to get snowflakes in the next shipment (in 1 to 2 weeks). Figured I could test with another fish since the water seemed to be fine. Walked around the store and fell in love with a bicolor blenny that was poking out from a fake coral in the tank. So far he is the most interesting fish I ever had. Constantly moving in and out through my rock work. Think the BRS Pukani rock really fits him well. He has already eaten my food as well so hopefully this guy won't starve himself to death.

So this tank is just a 28 biocube with the LEDS? I was thinking about getting the 29biocuble with the metal halide but if your coral did so well under just LEDs I may go that route and it be a little cheaper.

The LEDs I have are the JBJ stock 89w versions. Had really good success with them before the tank crashed but lighting is only one part of the equation. LEDs are still as higher upfront cost but will pay back over the life of the tank with less maintenance cost and cheaper electric bills. I am planning to upgrade to a Radion at some point. Just love how you can control it and it would be awesome to rip out the stock LED hood to get rid of the noisy fans. One day maybe.

Sorry about the clowns, weird that they both went at the same time... :(

You should look into some Sustainable Aquatics clowns, my LFS stocks them and I've never seen an ugly pair, including the pair I bought about a year ago. You can find them online if you can't get em locally.

Yesterday was an exciting day. Got my WXM module for my Apex controller delivered. Now I can precise control my MP10es throughout the day without having to manually change mode on it.

Unfortunately my home network stopped working last night so had to do most of the programming from the display unit which is not as easy as via the web interface.

Right now it is setup as follows:

8.00 am to 12.00 pm - Tidal Swell at 70%
12.00 pm to 8.00 pm - Reef Crest at 80%
8.00 pm to 10.00 pm Pulse mode at 75%
10.00 pm to 8.00 am Lagoon at 40% (my night mode)

When feed cycle is initiated the MP10 will first go into Constant mode at 30% for 5 minutes, then it will change to Nutrient Transport mode at 100% for 5 minutes before returning to normal schedule.

I still need to fine tune my schedule, probably add a couple of more mode changed throughout the day, but overall I am very happy with the new module. I can finally take full advantage of the MP10's features. Think my corals and fishes will love the new more random water movement throughout the day.

Time for an update again. Have been an exciting time. All parameters are still very good. Contributing this to having a good skimmer as well as running GFO and carbon from day 1.

Went to my LFS to see if they had a Yasha Goby. None in stock so I ended up with a nice Duncan instead.

Here are the new WXM module that now controls my MP10.

About a week later I went back to my awesome LFS and fell in love with a nice specimen of a RBTA. I know I should wait longer but I could not resist myself. Have had RBTA before but this one looks so much cooler than the one before. HAve been in the tank for about 4 days now and it has settled down right where I want it and has really cool colors. Pictures below does not do it justice.

And here is a photo that shows how well its foot has settled down inside the rock work.
_MG_6646.jpg

Only issue I have with the RBTA is that my skunk cleaner shrimp for some reason want to pick at it. If that continues he will go back to the store. Now I just need my snowflake clowns to get back in stock at my LFS.

At the same time as I got the RBTA I also got a small Tuxedo urchin. He is the coolest thing. Walks all over the tank scraping any algae it can find. My best grazer hands down and the coolest invert in the tank at the moment. Likes to put stuff on top of himself as a fashion statement I guess.

Last night I took a short video of the new RBTA. The colors are way off on this video. Have not figured out how to get them true to the world under the blue LEDs.

(Have not figured out how to embed YouTube here yet)

Time for an update again. Got a few more items this week and some older ones that was not in previous updates.

First out is my porcelain crab. This guy is very cool. Sits on the rocks with his filter arms out catching food. Very fun guy.

I have been searching for a Yasha Haze goby for some time now but they seem to be very hard to get hold of. SO at one of my hopeful visits to my LFS to see if thy had one (more fun to stop by than to call and I was passing by anyway) I found this awesome ORA Hawkins Echinata. Had one successfully in 1.0 of this tank and could not pass up this one.

_MG_6650.jpg

Picked up these two guys a couple of days later. Meteor Shower and a Ricordea.

_MG_6653.jpg

Mid week I got a call from my LFS (they are awesome) telling me that they got my snowflake clowns in stock again. Picked up these two after work. So far so good. They are very active and eats pellets so far. Have also looked at my RBTA but not touched it yet. Hopefully they will go in soon.

Cont...

Been searching for a nice Torch for a very specific spot in the tank. Today I found one that I hope will work out perfect.

This one. It has six heads and an awesome green color.
_MG_6655.jpg

Also picked up this Dendro. Always wanted one but never been able to get one. This one just opened up and I will feed it later tonight with mysis. The yellow is even more vibrant that what the pictures shows.

_MG_6657.jpg

_MG_6674.jpg

Got this very bleached Millipora for free. Will see if I can bring some color back to it.
_MG_6658.jpg

ORA Hawkins glued to my rock. (hate the ORA plugs. Impossible to get them off without harming the coral)

Meteor Shower mounted.

Ricordea mounted.

Finally, one of his many resting spots.

Took a short video of my new torch at its final resting spot.

Love the torch. They're one of my favorite corals, and they can grow like crazy. I had one of those that grew so much within 6 months that it took up a whole corner in my 58 gallon.

On another note, (I know I mentioned this before, but..) one again, I am absolutely astounded by the quick propagation of coraline algae in your tank!! Your tank has cycled twice during the time span mine's been running and I show barely any coraline growth compared to yours (though my corals are healthy). What's your secret?

Don't know if I am doing anything special. Trying to keep everything as stable as possible. Running ATO and Alk + Ca dosers (although those are not enabled in tank 2.0 yet). Planning to start them up this weekend.

are you using the stock led's from the ADVANCED Cube? I will be downgrading my 155 gallon reef to a nano...and was wondering about those LEDs. Also...do you think i will need a chiller? My apartment stay at 70F and my 155 gallon stays at 77-78 without a chiller.

thanks

I am still using the stock LEDs (advanced version) and have so far had fairly good luck with it. I did not think I would have needed a chiller myself until my tank temp hit 86F in May. Granted our house is kept warmer than yours. Fluctuate between 73F during nights to up to 80F during day time. YOu don't need a big chiller for a nano and to me it is a cheap insurance, especially if your AC would stop working for some reason.

I would start without and and monitor the temp closely.

Time for an update again. A new items have been introduced in the tank.

First off I found an awesome Green Bali Slimer.
_MG_6677.jpg

At the same time I also got this nice orange Yuma as well as a red Acan.
_MG_6678.jpg

_MG_6679.jpg

Then yesterday my LFS finally got my Yasha Haze gobies. Picked up a pair of those with a Candy Cane Pistol shrimp. Also found this awesome Strawberry Shortcake SPS.

Love the Yasha gobies.
_MG_6683.jpg

They quickly found each other and started to build their new home right by the glass for my enjoyment.
_MG_6685.jpg

_MG_6687.jpg

Home finally done. Under this rock 2 Yasha gobies and one Candy Cane lives. Seem to get a long just fine.
_MG_6703.jpg

Will let the tank settle a little now. Only have one more fish I want to add, a flasher wrasse but will wait a couple of weeks for that.

A short update. The tank is humming along pretty good. Think I have managed to dial in my alkalinity dosing pretty well. Still working on the calcium. Not consuming as much yet so regular water changes seems to be enough for now. Will keep monitoring it.

Here are FTS from October 1.
