in the pics.. whats the canistier that is horizontal on the return? on the right side of the pics of the bakc of the tank ...

Chicago Good question! That is actually a household sediment filter I nabbed off our incoming water line. When I started the tank I didn't have a skimmer and I had a lot of rock so I used that to get me by while I built the skimmer and I have kept it on since. It helps clarify the water and since this reef is still in a state of flux, I think it is beneficial. Ultimately I will get rid of it. I change the element about every 2 - 3 weeks or when the flow gets to slow.

More pics!

I am really having a hard time getting accurate colors in my pics. These clams are very different colors one being neon blue and the other a mixture of bright green and brown. I also find it interesting that they look much different from the top down than from through the viewing pane. They are astonishing without the acrylic in the way.

Acropora sp. This frag was purple and then turned brown at the LFS. It is turning back to purple in my tank but it is tough to see in this pic.

I believe this is a Pachyseris Rugosa. It is essentially brown with bright green cilia.

So have you taken melev's camera advice and snapped some pictures for us today?

Lights aren't on yet. Well, looking at the clock I guess the first one is on but I need to look productive while my wife is home...she is taking a break from a huge festival going on in town...time to mow!! I'll get to it later today. :)

No kidding! I just came back in because the battery needs charging (as always)...that little problem seems to be OK right now. But I have to go "commando" when on the tractor. yes, I am SERIOUS.

I got done vacuuming up all the dandelion seeds so it's time to get on it before any news ones pop up! :D

I was going to suggest the thong rather than Commache but that might do more harm than good. Come to think of it, it might strangle that sucker for you!

Whatever you decide... get on it gingerly! ;)

Got done with the front yard and my wife took off so I am going reefing! I'll check back with some pics if I get anything good.

Here's what I got so far. The first one is raw from the camera and the second one is the result of an "Auto Fix" from the software. Neither one correctly represents the colors although the second one seems to be closer. They do not really show the blue very well, and I noticed when I did the white balance that the photo from that still looked blue.

Seems better to me... Kind of in the same spot I am, looking for sharpness now. But then again I have two PHD cameras (Push Here Dummy), so the odds of that happening until I get a better camera is zilch.

Found two new creatures today:

The first looks a bit like an Aptaisia but with no trunk. It and at least 3 baby versions were growing on some macro in the fuge. The "tentacles" are similar to a baby brittle in that they have dark rings.

The other item was what appeared to be some kind of snail family member. I found it because it was spewing sperm into the tank and I got on top to check out what was doing it. It is shaped much like a half football about 3/4" in length and has antennae like a snail. It's shell had no point to it and was plain. It appeared to have one large foot BUT it moved extrememly quickly for a slug. I messed with it a bit with a long tongs and it tried to evade rather successfully. It did not cinch down on the rock but rather fled and it fell off the rock fairly easily. I could not capture it though as it was in about 30" of water and I just could not get to it. Possibly stomatella?

So anyone have any ideas??? :D

BTW, I also have some spider web looking stuff throughout the tank that looks like it is sticky. It goes away after a while.??

The spider web is probably from a vermetid worm. It spews a web to catch food upon, and reels it in to get its meal.

The other could be a stomatella if it had a small shell on its back that looks like a thumbnail. They move quickly, and if you try to grab it, the tail can fall off like a lizard's. I don't know if the tail grows up to be a new stomatella or not. I never try to remove them if this happens, and hope for the best.

Are the vermetids something I need to worry about? What about the stomatella? They are reef safe right?

Also, I emailed you about the "brown jelly disease" I saw on your web site. That sounds like it may be what ate my ricordia. Any thoughts on that? Do you have more info. on it?

The vermetids are generally considered a good filter feeder in the tank. They can occassionally overpopulate and smother some things, but that is rare and usually caused by feeding the tank too much food.

The Stomatella are one of the best snails to have, they are very good grazers and they can reproduce :D

I can't find the one picture I was given. I'll have to track one done for you, but when I get it I'll post it here.

So today I had a little screw up...The center lamp never fired. I messed around with all the connections and the ballast is humming, but no light. I examined the lamp though, and it doesn't look like there is any problem with it. Of course I have no back-up lamp because I figured these would last for a few months.

I have another lamp on order with over-night shipping but it won't get here until Friday. So, any advice on what to do with the corals/clams that are under that lamp? Should I move them? Any advice on figuring out if it is the ballast or just the lamp?
