Yeah I know but I couldn't get to it today. I have been working on this reactor and messing around with a bunch of stuff including moving around some rocks in my sump, which created a nice cloud in the tank.

And BTW, in case anyone is keenly interested, the smell of a dead sea hare is freakin' unbelievable. Just about the nastiest thing I have ever smelled.

Now I am worried the other one is dead somewhere in the tank where I can't see it. The sort of violet colored SPS I just got is ending up to be baby blue. It's really cool. I will try to get a pic tomorrow! :)

Tough day on the reef today guys. Lost the sea hare and now the elegance is receding dramatically. Also, I think the Naso may be retarded. He is triggered by the feeding frenzy and bolts into the pack, but does not eat anything and appears to get bored. Then he just hovers by himself.

I have no idea what the problem is with the elegance. It opened up so beautifully and I was really impressed with how healthy it looked. My water parameters are all good with zero phosphates and nitrates (Salifert), salinity is 1.025, calcium is 400 ppm, alkalinity is 7.9, zero ammonia, temp. is 77 - 80.3F. Seems like just plain bad luck but I know that's not probable. It's hard for me to imagine a scenario in which one day it looks totally healthy and the next day it is half dead. :(

Maybe the sea hare gave off something that is not measured by normal tests.

That's entirely possible but I got it out quickly and it didn't appear to have released anything yet. When I pressed on it in the bowl, it then excreted some nasty stuff. You could be right though, but I don't observe anything unusual with any other coral.

I am running fresh carbon and RowaPhos to see if that may help.

Jonathan, I am going to be in Seattle the first week of Dec. I would love to see your set-up in person if possible.

No problem on that, and bring a good macro lens! I have what is believed to be a previously undescribed animal in my system. We could have some photo fun! Jst PM me and we'll set it up.

BTW, Brad, that was indeed an excellent idea and the flow through to the conductivity probe increased quite a bit too. Thanks again! :D

jonathan I was just saying to you how good that elagance looked yesterday morning. At least that acro is killer.

Well I am not getting zapped if that is what you are asking. I had that problem a while back but I think it is solved. How would you recommend testing for that?

In fact, I have a hard time understanding how stray voltage can get into my tank since the only electrical items in the water is one titanium heater and my 3 probes.

I would put one probe in the water, and one to the grounded hole of an outlet. Then I'd move the probe to the common wire. Your meter should be on 120v.

This is one of those tests where you want to be very careful what you are doing, and don't do it barefoot on a concrete floor. If the needle or the digital readout indcates anything more than 0, there may be a problem.

The stuff you are reporting all at once make me think of stray voltage. A seahare that is white, a naso that doesn't eat, and the LPS closed up - too many coincidences.

Marc: I'll try it ASAP. All three problems are new to the tank too.

Brad: Wow, the Regal really looks good. Very active. Is it eating?

Hi Jonathan,

First off - thanks for helping me with my tank on my thread - I really appreciate the help. I was after a little info on your overflows - Im probably getting my tank rebuilt and I really like the way your tank and Sanjays's tank overfow through the back into a separate area - keeping the tank clear of pipes etc. Given the fun I had with my tank , I really like that idea and will hopefully be going with something similar. Could you give me the dimensions of the overflow on your tank please?

Especially - what is the length and depth of the *gap* that the water overflows through in the back?- I think I may make my next/new tank a couple of inches deeper than the current one to accommodate the change.

ta lots,
Bob

Jonathan,

Sorry to hear about the troubles :( As far as the elegance coral, it could be many things, but the mostly likely ones are:

1. ****ed off from water quality issue from sea hare, carbon and rowaphos should help with that possibly.

2. Normal behavior, many LPS that can expand and contract will have days of expansion and days of contraction, especially when adjusting to a new environment. If it continues for many days then something might be up.

3. It has the disease that the vast majority of elegance corals get, in that case there is very little you can do. The only thing you can do is to feed it heavily so it might have the opportunity to fight off the disease. You can also try medicated food, see this thread:

he is constantly nipping at rock, not coral. he has sampled a few things. not going crazy for food but tasting some of it and not spitting it out. I think he wants to clean out my sponges first.
