i remember reading about that in reefkeeper about alk swing in combination with calcium, if i get a chance later to day i'll try to fined it..... think there is a link on marc page to get you there if i remember correctly. i would guess though when yo uget your Ca reactor back up that will settel down.

pH seems to be fine, if not increasing slowly on average right now. Typicall my pH gets down to about 8.05 when the lights are out and up to about 8.20 - 8.25 when the lights are on.

Well I got the multi-media reactor back up and running today...thank someone for Weld-On #40!! :D I have 54 lbs. or CRM media (Schuran type) and it is running smoothly. I will be more careful about flows through it though. pH in the reactor was down to 6.25 in about 1/2 hour.

Tested the water for reference:

Salinity: 1.024
Ca: 410 ppm
Alk: 3.00 meq/L
Mg: 1450 ppm

I will be picking up some corals tonight so I am stoked and in prep. mode. Last time I fragged a "rescue" coral I had a really tough time. Even though I have some massive SS bone cutters, it is still nearly impossible to cut large pieces of corals. Is there some better tool? Are people using rotary tools for this?

johnathan.. yes, there were some threads for hte cheap dremel knock off from places like harbor freight (plus they were all DC operated, so less danger about holding a 120V A/C powered tool while working around water/wet locations). They ran around $14. I thought I recalled reading about one from HD or Lowes that was "popular". What we found was that not just straight uctting, but cutting with twisting to snap/break the frags was very helpful when fragging ther larger corals.

 well I'll give it a try. When I bring in corals I am so involved that I rarely get pics. It's just too intense. We will be dipping and acclimating at least 15 corals, and you all know how that goes!!

And the tank glass is so covered in coraline algae, I am having a hard time counting fish. I will definitely get a new photo of the reactor too.

Be careful here. I've got one of those POS. Don't waste your money. No power at all and as a right hander it just throws everything back at you.

I think I'll get a Dremel with cut-off wheels and try that.

No corals yet. :( Sherman and I went over at 9 pm but the LFS owner did not show up. Probably got delayed at the airport so I'll have to pick them up tomorrow.

You definitely want something witha bit of ooomph. They break easy when your moving them...but try cutting them!

You got an angle grinder? ;)

oh yeah baby, I got the major angle grinder. and a rheostat. If I could only find them in the heaps of crap in my shop.

angle grinder.. LOL :D. I have one with a large concrete wheel on it right now..used it for grinding down high spots on our concrete pad after it set up. Think that would be enough to cut a frag or two ? :)

We actually just use bone shears and/or diagonal cutters (since they can be a bit beefier sometimes). I have also see needle nose pliers use to twist/snap off frags.

When approaching the frags with this device I think it would be best to where a leather mask! Something like this.
