You didn't see the polka dots all over that coral?

I guess I thoght that was part of the coral. I've not seen an elegance coral up close. So all the polka dots on all of my coral aren't supposed to be there? :eek1:

Well, I cloeaned the viewing pane today. Couldn't get the bottom part because my damn Therme Algae Terminator is busted.

Also have noted that since I cleaned or swapped out all my probes, pH has been quite a bit lower hovering just at or below 8.00 and ORP is near 200. That's a huge difference from where I thought I was, and has messed with the way I manage the tank.

The lesson here is to not get complacent about probes. Just having the temp. probe plated will throw off everything. Today my fans didn't even come on, and I am guessing I have been running them needlessly for quite some time, and the temp. of my tank has actually been lower than i thought.

And the answer is NO.

How do you calibrate or clean your probes? I'm running ozone on one of my tanks and the ORP is always in the 400's and the thing isn't even kicking on. I'm sure it's the probe but I'm not sure what to do for it.

There is a calibration method specific to each probe. I clean them with a vinegar soak or even a weak muriatic acid soak. My ORP probes are factory calibrated and supposedly don't need calibration "for the life of the probe". And here's the problem. What is the life of the probe? I am told by Curt @ Neptune that probes last 12 - 24 months.

But typically in a controller situation, the probes reference the temp. probe, so that is where you start. You have to inspect it regularly for plating and clean it to keep that off. Once you have done that, then you start looking at the other probes.

If you have a stand-alone ORP probe, then referring to the Ozone maker manual would be the best idea.

yeah, they can get plated by coraline and other elements attracted to electrically charged pobes. It could even be heavy metals.

Turns out the retarded sebae clown IS feeding the PLTA, just not what I am giving it. Seems like it is editing what the anemone gets, because when I fed the fish tonight, the clown brought the PLTA a nice sized piece of food, and allowed it to eat it. The PLTA is now much larger than it has ever been, and it's color is pretty good too.

Jonathan, when you were drawing up plans to build your skimmer, did you ever consider just using a large plastic barrel as the body and something like cutting off the top of a large sparklett's drinking water bottle as the top? or something along those lines? just wondering if anyone has tried doing it on the cheap?

So how's your clams going now? Looks like the above figures may be your problem, more the ORP than the pH. I doubt the heavy metal theory when looking at you ORP

yeah, I need to look at the ORP but right now I do not trust any of my probes. The temp. probe seems to be bouncing around a bit and I need to figure out what is going on.

And about the skimmer build: I did consider using a plastic barrel, and even a plastic coated drum, but what I ran into was the whole connecting the cone issue.

Skimmers can be built out of just about anything. You just need a lot of air, a way to channel the foam into and up a riser, and allow it to fall off into a collection cup/bucket. If you could find a way to get a good seal on a Brute trash can, that would work fine. And you can buy the cones pre-made.

Hey Jonathan,

I got your frags ready to go but realized I don't have bags or the heat pack. I will get those today and ship tomorrow if that will work for you.

Yeah what kind of air pump do you use. Is that the yellow thing I saw on your website. WHat cones you talking about? Do you have any ideas where I can get them. Trying to keep the cost down on this so I can actually afford some coral.

The air pump is an Alita 100. I would highly recommend the Alita line. They are real workhorses. Mine was completely filled with saltwater over a year ago and it is still running strong.

You can get pre-made cones from Global Plastics and I think Scott (spazz) will make them for you too.
