I'm just surprised that you set up a personal tank with a wild coral. It certainly doesn't reflect your old ethics on the hobby. You are definitely entitled to change your mind, and I'm glad you have actually. I wish you the best with your new tank and in the hobby in general. I was just surprised, that's all. I take it you no longer believe the hobby or wild coral collection is a threat to wild reefs? If so, I would be interested in what made you think differently. Shawn, right now I'm doing 5 gallons every week on Sunday. I'd like to try to stick to that. I am very very big on regular water changes. I do system maintenance on my Green Tree Python/Orchidarium system on Sundays as well without fail, so it's easy to be in that routine.
I've always liked the Chondros especially when they get the blue colour while breeding. Have you considered an automated misting system for your Apex? I use a pressure tank and spray nozzles with a solenoid hooked up to an RO/DI.

I remember the excitement of finding porites on astrea snails. SPS selection has improved for sure. I have some Pacific Spirobranchus worms on Montipora and millepora and they have lasted over a year. Anyone else able to keep xmas tree worms long term? I haven't tried them lately, but ports with xmas tree worms always became algae magnets and receded into base rock after a few months. These were high nutrient tanks though.

Just one, most of them were gone by the time I got it. All I cared about was the Porites. Ohhh the starboard days. Yeehaw.

Sweet tank! I like it, and the thinking behind it. I'd stick some really shallow water species like gemmifera, humilis, etc. in there and watch what happens. Would be awesome if you could get the tight growth like you see in wild acros.
Oh, and FWIW my Oct 2001 TOTM was a 40 gal breeder with 840W of lighting. 400W over a 20 is just fine. Too bad RC lost its writeup. You can see it in Mike Paletta's Ultimate Marine Aquariums book though. Ahh...the days of free dorm electricity

Member of our club? We are scattered across the USA and belong to various clubs (but none of us are in the same club), or none at all (Neither Chris or I belong to a club). Several are authors, several are researchers, and those that are neither, have worked in the trade for a long time

Ok OP I never said your setup was wrong in any way and not saying it cant work. I just was giving you some advice on how to improve it and make it better. I can tell from the pics that it was a well thought out built and lost of time and thought went into it, but no really it looks like you just half threw a tank together with no planning. I am no noob even though my join date was in 2010 I had an old account back in 2005 and at that point I have been reefing for 2-3 years. To the comment made about people being post whores, most of my posts are in my own threads that I started, comments on members sweet reef tanks and help where I can be helpful. I wish you luck with this set up and I expect you to make many changes to it as it ages.
What do people expect on here when they post a pick on a 2 day old tank, with nothing but a power head, 1 small piece of LR and corals already. People are going to say something and its because we want to see people be successful with their reef tanks. My first thought when I saw the OP setup was concern for the life of corals in it and safety, cheap metal rack, power cords every where...
