Olasana Lagoon: High Energy SPS Nano Build Thread

wait.. how do you draw a connection from a 550 gallon growout system, to a 20 long with a pvc skimmer, a single branch of rock and a 400w halide?

I'm thinking it has little to no rock in it..........If I remember correctly back in those good old days some were growing acros with no rock in the tubs.

Halides on for two hours & no alternating currents didn't seem to affect acros back then either. The acros must have gotten pickier since then..................must be cause they are all LE corals now, & need all that money thrown at them to pamper & grow 'em.

Here is a pic of part of a 550 gallon grow out system that has been running essentially the same way as Galleons tank for the past 4 years.

Yet the attitudes haven't changed.

Acro's haven't gotten pickier, but the success rate of wild corals, and with species diversification has gone up just a tiny bit in the past 10 years.

As has our ability to main vibrant colours from what used to be the most stubborn of corals. Look at the quality and quantity of corals people are able to get and keep these days. Rarely did we see wall to SPS like so many recent threads or even totm. (Yes there were the few exception) but typically few and far between.

And if you want to sling mud at least aim. If you don't think there were LE Acros back in the early 2000's, or very high priced vendors then either (reefer madness, aqua designs, my self lol ;0, reef science, frag farmer). You are living in a dream world. The culture hasn't changed in coral sales over the years only the ability for a larger group of people to propagate and grow a lot of interesting corals. The diversification of acropora available to us these days is higher then it ever was.

Yup, back in the good ole days all corals were neon rainbow colours that could live out of water and costed a penny.. Nobody EVERY charged 500$ for an effo, or 200-300$ for 1/4" Purple Monster frags, and Green Slimer was a nickle foot...Why they were giving away sunset montis back then..er no wait the last two are today..back then sunset montis, slimers, and torts were big bucks.

Yes you can grow coral with little to no live rock. I've done it, you have to watch for bac-blooms if you don't have a skimmer I never disputed this. Please don't get me confused with other posters. I also don't believe in Live Rock @ all. All my tanks are built off dead rock, the rock ain't magic it's just a surface area. (But this is a whole different discussion)

No you are right though.. why do I bother responding. I long for the days of big brown acros, 6500k bulbs, and yellow tanks at least then I would be able to dust off my SPS goggles and put them to use again!

I once claimed that I used Vitamin C to cure ich, and busted myself a couple posts later and there are still people asking about it from time to time. The fake product 'InstaFlow' still gets people asking where they can buy it.

I only asked if it was ascorbic acid or chewable vitamin C.

Lol.............relax, you're taking this way to seriously.

good popcorn

Just relax ... and enjoy the popcorn :fish2: there are many ways of preparing and enjoying popcorn ... ;)

Galleon way to go  ... I do like it and did like it even more when you had it sunlit ... wish you could keep it sunlit as you did initially.

The fixture is 24" from the surface of the water. You see struggling SPS frags that I added two days ago?

Have you ever seen this species of Porites in the wild? Does this color look familiar?

This is the familiar color indeed  I like this brown

I just have one thing to say: Eco-Aqualizer. Well, make that two: Coral+Vital. And add some Sano. While you're at it, some tri-pelletized carbon from Hiatt would be good too. I think I have some of the collector's edition autographed by Snake lying around if you need it.

Bonus points if you add any product with Albert Thiel's name on it. Protip: probably best not to win this one by putting one of his books in the tank.

Hmmm. Still no sign of bleaching, pH rock steady between 8.10 and 8.14. No bacterial bloom, good polyp extension. It's the end of the world as we know it.
