Old Castle sand .. located! YAY!!

I just got back from a trip around town looking for sand with a bottle of vinegar. I checked 3 different brands at Home Depot (Pavestone, Quickrete and BEST brand) all 3 just kinda laid there... I stopped at a small town hardware store and found OLD CASTLE bags!!! about a pallet full. I bought 18 bags and loaded the 900lbs into my CAR WITH MY 3 KIDS!!! and then drove home. When I left I counted 50 bags left. The store is called
HOME HARDWARE in Ashland. I am about 20 minutes away from there but my wife has the van or I would offer to go get more. If anyone wants any better call now and maybe you could pay in advance then pick up later with credit card. It was $3.99/bag.

I put some in vinegar and it is bubbling but not rapidly dissolving. It does seem a bit browner that the HD sand was but it is also wetter inside the bags of Old Castle.

If there is interest I could call the store and ask if they could get us a pallet for the club and maybe they would give us a group discount... Let me know if I should.

fyi, if your looking for the tropical play sand we are all used to. THIS IS NOT IT. the stuff is definitely BROWN. went down to pick up a pallet and only thing i came back with was a HEFTY gas bill. for those who are interested, they have several pallets of it.

I was going to head down there today as well. I took a closer look at the photos of his trunk and noticed it looked brown. Sorry I didn't speak up sooner.

It should say caribbean or tropical play sand for the right stuff... The only stuff I have been able to find is the Caribbean play sand made by YardRight it is definately white with little sea shells and other ocean remnents in it. Even when wet it is still an offwhite color and it bubbles like crazy with vinegar.

The only place I have found the "real" stuff is Canton Road Garden Center in Akron... Call before you go because they don't always have it. Last time I found it was last year end of year, I have like 4 bags of it left in the garage waiting for a good time to use it.

I got some from Canton road in akron last year. It was brownish in the bag, but once it is wet and under the lights it is white southdown sand.

I recently came across something called Kolorscope at Home Depot and it is distributed by Old Castle. It was very white and almost looked like large salt crystals. I'm not sure if it said play sand on it either, it may have been for landscaping.

Anyone think this is the same stuff or would work? I'm thinking about going there with some vinegar, but I'd feel pretty dumb. I may just buy a bag and test it at home. lol.

It does say not for aquarium use and may contain silica...

I found the same stuff locally to parma at pettities and would like to know if it safe as well

I put the stuff in a test tube with vinager and it bubbled. It worries me that it looks like little crystals though... Isn't that silica based sand?

The only reason to use the vinegar test is because visually some kinds of calcite can'te be distinguished from quartz. Little sand crystals that react to vinegar are calcium rich.
