old hands thoughts on hobby

20 years+, all on a tight budget!
Pros; DC wavemaker pumps.
Grazers; seriously, the proliferation of grazers was the turning point for many of my generation!
Cheap and varied frozen foods and additives, allowing for vastly improved survival chances
(Moorish idols and Goniopora, anyone?)

Im not a fan of LEDs; after a £500 outlay, I have pretty much the same soft coral growth as I did on T8s, T5s and 14k MHs, and the wattage to get that growth is similar too!

Cons; that pre-internet innocence that let you spend a fortune on specimens with zero chance of survival!

1990 first tank here. Oceanic 75G with the wide center brace.

Who still has a copy of JEN Veron's Corals of the World? I have two (no idea how), but they are like gold to me.

Pros: Chemistry and bacteria have not changed. Frozen Mysis and NLS pellets. Solar panels to offset impact on tank energy. Some places collect better than they did.

Cons: That internet has given everybody an equal voice. Controllers that allow people to not pay attention to their tanks as much. Basement fraggers who want to get rich (yeah right) and farm corals instead of have a reef tank. Photoshop. Blue lights. People who want credit for how a coral looks under only blue lights.

Hmmm, wasn't sure if I fit the bill, but I've had reef tanks for going on 15 years. So I guess so.

Pros:
New Tech.
Info from people that aren't trying to sell you stuff.

Cons:
Silly names and super jacked up prices for just about any corals.
People seem more interested in arguing that they are right than discussing different techniques.

For me the biggest difference between now and the early 90's when I started is simply knowledge and it's availability. Answers to almost anything are out there for those who want to look.

Captive grown corals and fish have flourished, that's a huge plus.

Technology wise it's changed, but not so much as we tend to think. I'm still using mh lights, still using similar pumps, etc. Dc wavemaking has been a big plus, giving us wave patterns that we could only approximate in the past. Controllers are nice, but we took care of the tanks just fine with timers and switches.

The tech has streamlined things for sure, but I'm not so sure it's all that very different from the past. The fundamentals remain fundamental.
