Oldude's Little Reef on the Prairie

this thread is what got me back into my reef tank and it just keeps getting better. beautiful tank and great pics, thanks for sharing.

Just discovered tonight my skimmer feed pump has been barely running and I assume it's been over a month. I was wondering why I wasn't getting any skim-mate so I checked the pump and pulled out 8 or 9 snail shells that were blocking the flow on the intake. Now it's fixed I am hoping for some better colors and less non-performers throughout.

Without the force of the pump you will not get enough bubbles, therefore not enough surface area on which surfactants can cling, regardless of the dwell time.

Surprised the longer dwell time did not pull some stuff out.
Not enough flow through the reactor chamber is ineffective in removing "proteins" from the actual system.

Yeah what Dave said.

as usual, your corals look amazing, especially these...

Thanks - I am happy with the way those two are coming along these days. They both had a hard life and I nursed them along and now they are really starting to smarten up. The picture doesn't show it very well compared to in person but the polyp extension on the bottom one is absolutely insane!

I thought you had a separate feed vs recirc pump.

It is a separate feed for the skimmer which is why it was such a problem with the pump intake being blocked. Unless I am not understanding your comment/question properly.

I think I misunderstood the statement at first.

I was figuring just a slower flow rate.

I have an external skimmer. I have dialed it back before for a slow flow, but opted for a slightly higher flow with less dwell time.
