Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

Beautiful coral Greg, I've never seen a blue tip green slimer. This is exactly the same type of damage I'm having on my corals too. My tips totally lose tissue then algae starts to grow on them.

Thanks Dan. Yes that coral looks really nice when it's healthy. I am thinking the bad carbon was only a part of my problems. Some corals are doing better than ever while some continue to keep going downhill.

I'm jealous. Since losing my pair I've been unable to find two that will live together...so I have one and he's lonely. I wish I could tell the difference between the males and females.

I am not sure how to tell but for some reason I think the male is the larger one on the left.

I don't see it but I'm glad you do. Thanks for looking & thanks for the compliment.

zaheda - Your tank doing great, the corals look happy.
Thanks but I wish they happier. I am still having issues I can't figure out.

klondike4001 - Spectacular as usual. Never a disappointment to get an update email for this thread.
Thanks for subscribing and all your kind words Jonathan.

Dang Greg, sorry to hear. I was hoping that the carbon would be the root cause and remedied with it's removal. Hope you find the issue soon.

I was at another reefers place today and as luck would have it they are having the same issues as I am. During the course of our discussion we figured the only other change I made and that they made was changing the DI resin in the water filter. I am starting to think this might be it. The original resin from the factory lasted a good 6 months but the stuff I replaced it with turned colour within two weeks. I just left it because I thought it can't go that fast. I also remember that when I first changed the DI resin the water was coming out cloudy which I thought was strange. I have now taken my DI cartridge off line so the water is just straight RO and see if this makes a difference. I emptied the holding tank so I will do a WC ASAP with brand new H2O. I have also been noticing that since the new DI resin whenever I do a WC I seem to have at least one coral RTN the next day so I think there must be something to my theory. I plan to talk to Ryan at BRS and see what he thinks since that is where we both got the DI resin.

Hope this is the source of your problems Greg. At least you still have enough nice, deeply colored corals! Very nice photo's again

Very interesting theory Greg. Coincidentally, that is where my DI resin is from, please post what you hear from Ryan. My last bag was the non-color changing but I just opened a color changing bag two weeks ago. Hum...

With the DI offline the new water changes seem to be helping. No RTN since then so I think this was the issue. Yeah it's wierd that some corals look great while others, obviously more sensitive to change, look really bad. Unfortunately I lost several of my favorite colonies in this fiasco so I am hoping & praying the problem is now resolved.

Greg, I hope that this is the issue and it is now resolved. Just out of curiosity what was the TDS read once the new resin changed color?

I will always have a soft spot for the green inner rim of the vermiculata coralite
