Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

You nailed it Greg... too many reefers are hellbent on having the perfect aquascape (which IMO means rock-scape), when really the coralscape is what makes a tank

Actually all my favorite tanks are just a couple of pieces of Live Rock on the SB... which intially people would go "HUH?" if shown a picture at the tanks' conception... then shown a picture a year or so down the road and you can watch their jaw hit the floor from a standing position.

BTW, the granulosa is disgustingly awesome as usual :smokin:

No...an eye for aesthetics...right now it looks like a colored stick forest (again the corals look great) I was wondering if he was going to move things around "now" as opposed to "later". I agree when they grow in it will most likely look great, but in the meantime i just thought he might be moving things to achieve a more appealing aesthetic for now.

As for aquascape meaning rockscape...whatever..simplify it to this if you wish. I will use the term reefscape to better forward what i was trying to say for those with no imagination. (sometimes giving one charity in what they say goes along way...) I could simplify it further by saying are you going to leave the little sticks 'o color where they are or arrange them in a "******scape" as they grow..ie so it looks aesthetically pleasing now as opposed to only when they grow in.

But seeing as he answered my question....nevermind.

Since it is an sps tank I guess that's sort of what I'm going for. If you saw it in person you may feel differently but then again maybe not. The nice thing about this hobby is we can all build our reef's to suite our own personal tastes. That said I am going to assume that we don't have similar taste.
Thanks for looking anyway.

I've seen your old tank in person :)

I wasn't meaning to offend, I think I am losing some depth in the posted pictures I assure you...I like it, it just looked like the sps was sitting there waiting to be put in the right spot that's all :) Maybe I am too impatient and want it to look like it will in a year or so's time right now...who knows mostly just curious. Snappys has not lost the wow...trust me :)

My true lack of photo skills really come out with this tank. I have not been able to get a picture that I am happy with so far. Nothing I do seems to do justice at showing the 36" depth.

Just keep posting pictures. We'll let you know when you've finally mastered the art and can thus then stop. :) (Don't count on it being anytime soon. :p )

I think the feeling of depth is sometimes lost (forest for the trees sort of thing) when you do FTS's (the figurative "you" not the literal "you" in this case, I'm talking in general), because the wide angle gives us a frontal view and there's a lot of information to process, and we only see the front edge. I think to give a sense of depth, you have to narrow your focus a little and try different angles looking through things at something else. This is hard to describe, but what I mean is sometimes it's more about what you don't show, but only hint at or tease about the rest, than it is about what you do show.

But bear in mind I can't take a good tank picture to save my life. So temper these comments accordingly. :)

Greg your pictures are always an inspiration for all of us. Full tank shots are the toughest to capture. You can never capture the true beauty of real life, and you alway lose depth. But your coral closeups are second to none.

Thanks for the tips Tony. Next time you come by bring your camera and I'll see if we can get some clearer shots with a better camera.

Thanks for your kind words Bradley. :)

Waif I am having a hard time adjusting to the new look since my old tank was so full and in time I am confident it will fill in but for now they have some growing room.

Greg, you may have hit on an idea there...maybe we should send you all our brown SPS to see what they really look like...haha.

I only wish my brown-outs would color up this quickly! That's a great looking coral.

Here's an interesting piece. I found this under a bunch of stuff when I tore my 130 down. It was completely brown and I couldn't even remember it as although very brown it had grown since I put it in and lost it. I figured I would not have put it in the display if it didn't have potential so I gave it another chance and it is colouring up very quickly considering it went into the new tank totally brown just 3 weeks ago. :D I think I like it.

My PH keeps climbing and is now at 8.5. Until lately my ph levels were always around 8.1. Any thoughts about what might be causing the big increase? I am not doing anything different and the other parameters are where they should be except I am having a big algae bloom. Would a higher ph encourage diatoms or vise a versa or are these a coincidence?

Greg,

Did you add any new sand or agrocrete, or aragonite or maybe even LR or base rock when you set this puppy up? Definitely agrocrete and aragonite and some sands can temporarily increase ph IME. Everytime I refill my CR My PH goes up from 8.1-2 to 8.4-5 for about 2 weeks. also fresh air can really raise ph if you didn't have very resh air before?

Diatoms are usually a sign of increased silicates in the water. Could be new sand or a worn out DI cartridge?

Good luck and I LOVE your tank BTW,

James

Thank you James. Now you mention it I have added some fresh sand which likely increased the ph level, good call. I think I've been over feeding as well so that may also be contributing to the algae bloom. I may also cut back a bit on the intense photo period for a while.

Are you measuring this pH at the exact same time of day? You know that goes up and down daily, so it is important that you measure at exactly the same time of day if you are trying to see a trend change.

You can also cause a change that will last a day or so if you've been working on the tank and reduced the lighting at all, even temporarily.

I know there can be variances but I have never seen it at 8.5. For my water that is very high. I'm sure it will settle down soon.

Gred that is purdy!..
Glad you like it, thanks. It's starting to smarten up but I think it will be another month or two before it's back to how it should be. I will do another update when it changes. :)

Just discovered my RO unit is hooped so my tank has been running on tap water so I am sure this has added to the algae bloom. :mad2: I will be replacing it this week ASAP.
