Oldude's new 400 gal tank build

Western_reefer - Nice! Do you have only 1 Leopard Wrasse or do you have a pair?
I just have the one. I wish I gad got a pair instead.

DanW - Greg, Your tank is simply amazing and man you’ve got photo skillz! How do you deal with the corals growing together? Do you let nature take its course or do you trim? Do you still add frags to the tank? If so, how do you find a spot where they’ll get light? Fantastic job on the tank, I love mature SPS dominated tanks and you have one of the best.
Many thanks Dan, welcome aboard. I do trim but I have a hard time keeping up with it all so some of the time nature takes it's course. I still always seem to be adding some new frags and generally can find a spot.
Frags are like Jello-----there's always room.
;)

i always admire you tank.i was wondering if i can borrow more ideas from your build. i just want to know what kind of calcium reactor or are you using bailing method? also is your tank euro brace but i want to do a modified euro brace with 3 cross braces just to be sure or its not necessary ? the tank will be in wall see through so it will have support on each side a up top. thank you very much

Western_reefer How are the Pyramid Butterflyfish doing? I'm thinking about getting myself a pair.
They are doing great. I think they are a great addition to my reef and I think you'll enjoy them.

Thanks very much and you are welcome to any ideas you get from my system. I don't have a calcium reactor, actually never have. I use a Profilux controller & doser and I use Randy's recipe #2. My tank is eurobraced and I have two 3" wide front to back braces on the tank.
What size is the tank?

Greg, Quick question...How do you anchor your frags in your display? Do you glue them directly to your rock structure or to a piece of rubble or...?

Greg - I thought I read in a previous post that you are running Polyp Lab's System Reef-resh... If so, how do you like the results thus far? Thanks.

Scott

Hi Dan,
I use both those methods as well as putty them to a larger rock that won't get knocked over by the fish. For example if the frag is on a plug I usually cut the nub off the bottom and mount with a mix of glue & putty.

Scott I stopped using Reef-resh about a year ago when I changed tanks because of the cost. I used it for about 2 years in my old system and was happy with the results. I don't do any carbon based dosing in this system.

I've been getting some interesting morphs with some of my corals this year. Here's a couple of examples....

I call this first one Avalanche on the branch

At the top right of this picture you can see a few branches of s.hystrix. This coral has always had blue polyps for the 5 years I've had it but recently it's getting a mix. Some branches still have blue polyps & some now sport green polyps...crazy.

wow Greg. That Avalanche is really weird. It looks as though something may be growing on the branches from the picture...

It reminds me of snow on a tree in the Forest....

I thought it was a parasite or something at first but the white area grows in thickness and width as well and seems to just be a wierd morph.:twitch: I guess if nothing else it makes that colony rather unique.

How are the Pyramid Butterflyfish doing? I'm thinking about getting myself a pair.

I have to second the Pyramid Butterflyfish. I have had three for close to two years or about there. Unfortunately I lost them due to a stupid accident on my part (actually two seperate stupid things I did :hmm2:)
On a good note I have three more in quarantine now and Im thinking of getting two more. I'll be adding them to my 367 gallon next month.

They're awesome fish: peaceful, active, intelligent, not shy, not aggressive, hardy, gorgeous. Can you see I love these fish?

I feel it's a must to treat them for flukes upon arrival. All of mine from three different suppliers and two different locations had flukes. Luckily it's easy to treat.

I'm kinda' liking this stylo these days. It's always been bright but lately it almost requires one to wear sunglasses.
