I used the Ultra Life Red Slime Remover 2 months ago and this happened:

Over $1500 down the drain. I emailed the company 2 times and never got a responce.

that is why i try to stay away from chemical additives... Sorry about that man... I would call them up

they will not do anything. it says right on the box you use at your own risk. but that sucks. did you add the airstone with a pump? the only way I can see that happening is if the oxygen level got to low. when I used it I had 3 airstones going for 3 days in the display tank. That was a long time ago.

Oh and you may want to think about mesh & gate valve modding your ASM to boost its performance.

i tried looking for mods for the ASM... but could not find them.... can u send me a link please...

everything is still alive.... including some but not all the cyano.. :(

I did a 25% WC a few mins ago and added some Seachen Reef Buffer to raise the pH and now my water is soooo cloudy... it never became cloudy like that before when I used this product....

I will be prepping some more water to do another WC within a couple of days....

So I did a 25% 2 days ago, another 25% today and another 25% on Sunday... Is that OK? is that too many WC back to back??

ASM Gate Valve Kit

You'll have to look around for the exact ASM mesh mod. I don't know if people are modifying their current pin wheels, or picking up a new impeller/wheel and modding that.

Here's basically how it's done though:

thx bud...

can u send me the instructions and parts list for the gate valve mod?? I can get plumbing parts very cheap and I think that 37.99 plus shipping and duty is a little crazy compared to me buying what I see in the picture for less than 1/2 the price....

as for the mesh mod... is it really worth doing to a G1X?? while searching it on google I read a thread that said that you wont get much of an improvment on a G1X....

also I found a little video on a step by step on how to do the mesh mod...

I had cleaned out my skimmer before I added the poison.... I actually clean out my skimmer every morning as part of my routine of cleaning the cat's litter box....

If I were to drill a hole in to the collection cup and run tubing to a bucket and left it overnight it WILL overflow... (I emptied the collection cup 3 times in about 5 mins) and to make matters worse I would be losing water in my system and end up running the return pump dry.... from what I have read people just turn off their skimmers but add an airstone for the oxygen.... I dont have one so in my thinking leaving the skimmer on can't hurt... unless someone can give me a valid reason that it will....

thanks for trying to help.....

thanks for your thoughts though....

i agree i would never againdrill a hole into a collection cup.. I came home one morning to see water coming out from under the garrage door into the driveway and then open the garrage door to see water pouring from the cealing. i ran upstairs and in was my skimmer going nuts. water was going into the collection cup and out the tapped hole int a 5g bucket and then into the carpet then through the floor... still dont know what caused it (think it was a calcium build up in the air line) but my dad wasnt very happy when i call him when he's on vacation invegas (im in jersey) and saying " dad by the way about 50 gallons went through the cealing into the garrage and its not good ... yeah sad to say it but i learned the hard way

I found this on google for the gate valve mod.....

gatevalvemod.jpg

credits goto Woodstock at this site http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/equipment/27203-asm-gate-valve-mod.html

lools pretty straight forward.....

Is a gate valve the same as a ball valve?? If not would a ball valve wark instead of a gate valve???
Yeah it's a pretty straight forward, simple modification. I would not use a ballvalve. The gate valve allows you to dial in the skimmer in slower, more precise increments. I don't think a ball valve would provide more control than the stock method on the ASM.

cool thx for the info tswifty....

your knowledge in this vast field of reefing has helped me out a lot since I joined RC...

hope to hearing morefrom you.

many thanks again...

Because a product contains an antibiotic, it does not necessarily mean its going to reduce the nitrifying bacteria population to a dangerously low level. Different bacteria have different sensitivities/resistance to various antibiotics. Cyanobacteria is quite a different animal than typical nitrifying bacteria. Whether Red Slime remover greatly impacts the general nitrifying bacteria or not, I don't know but I don't think we should assume one way or the other just because its contains an antibiotic.

This is true but a typical tank contains many types of bacteria some of which I am sure will be affected by an antibiotic. These bacteria, whatever type they are will allow antibiotic resistant bacteria to replace them. This may or may not be a good thing.
I have used Red Slime Remover a few times when the stuff was invented and diden't notice any ill effects. I just like Chemi Clean better because there is no way of telling which bacteria will be affected and what effect thet may have on the general bacterial population.
I use Chemi Clean every 6 months or so just because my tank is very old and I like to add an oxidizer occasionally. It has been working for many decades so I will keep doing what I am doing.

thx for the info everyone...

is there anything I can do to besides more WC have my skimmer running normal??/ I have it set to the lowest setting and is still really over skimming....

I am thinking of maybe raising it out of the sump a couple of inches... hopefully that could help.... I am in the process of prepping some more water but will not have enough salt to do another 25% WC.. I think I will have enough for a 10%....

I will only be able to purchase some more salt on thursday...

Also... I was thinking... after I get my system running properly...

If I were to set up another skimmer to overskim and drain about 1g into a worksink and set up another Top Off of freshly mixed water to replenish the wetskim... would this work as an automatic waterchange system?? and If so how efficient would this be??? would I still have to do a monthly 30% WC ??

I was going through my boxes of misc aquarium stuff and I came accross my TDS meter t hat came with my RODI untit...

I decided to give a shot and use it for the first time and I got a reading of 037... it should be reading 0 or close to 0 right??

is this ok?? I just changed my finters about 3 months ago and my resin beads about 6 months ago...

ALSO...

while going through that box I found a 2.5g aquarium that worked perfectly to raise the skimmer out of the sump and now the skimmer is producing a more tolerable skimate... had it set up for a few hours and now I have about 1/4" of skimate in the cup... really diluted but better than having it over flow at it's lowest setting in less than 2 mins

Do you have a picture of how the skimmer is set up in your sump?

Where is the water level "inside" the skimmer?

it was skimming well yesterday... what you see in the cup is what was skimmed since my message yesterday.... at it's lowest setting the water level was just above the neck....

skimmeron25insump.jpg

i checked it this morning and the bubbles were not going up to the cup anymore.... I have to play around with it now to try and get some more bubbles.... I really think I will be doing the 2 mods on my skimmer this week.

Today will be 4 days since I put the red slime remover in the tnak... everything seems to be fine... here is a FTS of my DT now...

Looks good. A gate valve will help you dial it in better. Also a good starting point is to keep the water level somewhere between the red lines.

Also, you want to clean the collection cup & skimmer neck every few days or when it begins to get clogged. I clean mine and wipe down inside the skimmer body with a paper towel everytime I empty the collection cup.
