Just got home from a Thanksgiving trip and the tank is a complete disater!!!!

Freaking PS is overflowing, algea all over the tank, lost corals, and then I can't figure out why the Vortech is not working.

I pull the Vortech equipment out and the power adaptor/supply is melted!!!

Has this happened to anybody else?

Did the power adapter get wet possibly?

It is possible, but I'm not really sure how. There was some salt creep on the unit, but it did not feel wet and I did not see any signs of water inside the unit. Just not for sure.

Here is a picture.

WOW, Your lucky your house didn't burn down ! I'm looking at the photo and don't see a seal. Is that how there made ? If it did get wet you would think at the price these cost they could at least make it a little water tight. I was thinking of getting these. not now...

I don't see why they would make them water tight. With the cord running from the pump to the driver and from the driver to the power supply they could easily be 6 ft away from the tank. Are all of your extenstion cords/power strips water tight?

There is no seal, just a plastic shell that is screwed togethter.

I've got to think water got in there but I'm still puzzeled how as it was more or less off the carpet. The carpet was not wet.

Yeah, I'm feel lucky as well. My wife has not really paid attention to it or i would be getting rid of the tank tonight.

Other than this the unit has been great.

so why is tank loss and protein skimmer overflowing attributable to the VT's not working? is that your only source of circulation?

following up: if VT is your only source of circulation, then you would need be running your skimmer hang on. . . but that would provide plenty of circulation/aeration to the tank. Otherwise, if you're running circulation with a circ. pump of some sort via sump, I don't understand how VT not working would cause the tank crash. The driver is coupled to the propellor magnetically through the tank wall, so there should be no electicity going into the tank from fried/frying driver unit.

Obviously something happened to the driver, but I'm wondering whether that is the result of a power surge or something else, not the cause of your crash.

Kengar - Protein skimmer not working was one of several issues.

I do have a closed loop on the tank and the return pump from the sump.

The ground fault breaker worked as something triped it killing the power but that killed the power to everything. No lights, no CR, no return pump, no CL. Nothin.

Being on vacation when it happend I can only spectulate the cause to all the issues.

But so fat I've lost 2 monti's. One monti is bleaching and 2 arco's show signs as well.

Anyway, I do want to say the Ecotech has great customer service and I'm happy with what we worked out. So I still love my Vortech.
