If something like this ever happens to you and you lose everything, and you come on here to tell your story, I sincerely hope that not a single person from this forum helps you rebuild. No one deserves to lose everything, that is a horrible thing to say about him.

actually, that is where you are wrong. If that ever to happened to BUI, I will give him half of everything I own. At least that will be one person.

I agree with stlouisguy.

If he can't run the generator at night, couldn't he just get a big enough UPS so he could get thru the night with some powerhead running and run the generator in the morning.

You could get a decent UPS for around $100 nowaday.

Beside, doesn't he have a fishstore? Could he just transfer the corals over there?

After all say and done...everything is just hindsight now.

I maybe second guessing but I would though Hugo would use better judgment.

Good luck on rebuilding your tank.

yes i could have taken them to the store the first day the electricity went out but y if i thought that edison was going to put the elkectricity back on at the time they said? i taook there word for telling me they willl pu it on at ten and i also told them the problem i had so i thought the electricity would be back and there wouldnt be any worries

update**what i rescued all my watermelons all my acans and micros some montis about 3 ,2 cali torts colonies one small oregon tort and some of my chalices i rescued all this because all this is in my frag tank and basically everything in my display tank 90% sps is dead. also somebody requested about a picture but for now i am not thinking of putting a picture of how my tank looks because i want every one of yoyu to remeber my tank like this

ya once its late enough,he'll fall asleep!

^^^^^right on the head^^^^^^

Hugo,
very sorry to hear about what has happened... when i read this i called a friend of mine who is studying for the Bar... from what i understand from all the lawyer mumbo-jumbo is that since the tank was a source of income you might have a shot... but the issue here is following... did you ever make a track record of what you have sold along with receipts with EXACT CASH AMOUNT and DATED... and if this was looked at as a business might you have a Tax ID #... any and/or all of these things will help.

This is the first time i have had the privilege to view a photo of your tank, my heart has honestly dropped...could not have been a picture better painted... i personally have not been apart of this hobby for more then 6 months now but i have a deep love for the ocean and always have since i was a about 3 years old. to invest that amount of time and energy (money is nothing) into any one thing (5+ years ) and lose it over night, some ideots say "cheer up... its only a tank, the're only corals" but im sure it would be more like losing a close friend.
so i say to you... dont mind the ideots... they seem to have a strange way of filling in the blanks till it happens to them.

when i have a #^c*#@ up day... even though it looks NOTHING as soothing as yours....i turn to my tank...some people have Meditation...i have SALT WATER.

i only have one frag in my tank so far (thanks to reefguy714) that was given as a gift... i honestly dont even know what it is or what its worth... it looks like a small branch, reddish brown with polyps covering the entire thing... please allow me to do what i can. im in your area twice a month when venturing to Tongs... i will see you then

this is where you are wrong. Us, married people need your pic.s to convinced our wives to let us buy generators, otherwise they will never believe us even if we tell them. Not all of us have our nuts back since the day we got married. I haven't got mine and I don't know how many others do.:)

I can't agree with you more regarding helping out.

If I ever have a tank like him, I would do everything in my power before I left my corals die.

Hugo last statement sound kind of fishy...

Who in their right mind would take the corals to another tank due to an electricity issue and bring it back before the power is up. I would wait until the power is up and check everything is ok even before stressing the corals even more by transfering it back to a tank without any water moment.

If I'm wrong, then I'm sorry.

sorry but i am not going to put a picture at this time but you ARE reALLY welcome to come to my house and you can bring your wive so she can believe you and you could buy a generator

If i left my back yard gate open and my dog got run over I wouldnt need anyone to tell me I screwed up... and it wouldnt make me thankful for the advice. i would know I needed to shut the gate. I cant imagine the heartache

Thats the problem with women, show them a tank thats crashed because of not using a generator, and they will tell you the coral are just sleeping and you still dont need one.

I am really having a hard time believing the ugliness on this thread. Hugo does not deserve anyone second guessing him, questioning his dedication to his tank, or accusing him of laxness.

Preparedness is an excellent topic for reefkeeping, but perhaps the discussion should be moved somewhere less personal.

The frag tank is plumbed to the main tank. It has little bioload compared to the display. He was probably referring to the corals already in there.

But hopefully it might remind someone else to go shut their gate, or to be mindful of what can happen if they dont.

Always understand the problem, figure out a solution, find something positive from every experience, then move on.

SniperSPS ... this is a tragic day for all reefers who adored your tank for so long; my most sincere condolences ... I can only encourage you to set up a Frag Fund with information on how we can help send you frags of whatever it is you need to get back on your feet!

Already in the SPS keepers forum the initiation of "Reef Relief" for your tank has begun by people who are touched by this travesty ... just remember there are hundreds of us who can send you frags!

BINGO. Hugo please take pictures of this disaster to show everyone what can happen in a matter of hours if they to do not prepare. Otherwise you’ll just be letting one or more person figure out the same way you did. This should be a story in reefkeeping magazine as a warning to others.

It’s going on 8 days in the St. Louis area and still no power, and wouldn’t you know it was the hottest day of the year (102F) after power was lost.

I’m an entry level diver and one thing I’ve learn from the diving community is that its ok to discuses mistakes made so that the entire community learns from it. Here is something I’ve read on a dive site awhile back that really it’s the spot. Not all of this applies to reefing but its something to think about. Also remember that something that came out of this is that a lot of us is now more prep for a long term power outage then ever.

“If I should die while diving.

If I should die while diving please do not hesitate to discuss the incident and assess every element with a view to furthering your understanding of how to enhance diver safety.

If I should die while diving get the facts. They won't be readily available and will definitely not be correct as reported by the media. But get the facts as best you can.

If I should die while diving understand, as I already do, that it will most likely involve fault on my part to some degree or another so do not hesitate to point that out.

If I should die while diving some of the fault will probably belong to my buddy and that needs to be honestly assessed as well though I must admit this is one area where I hope that compassion will be in the mix.

If I should die while diving there might be those who try to squelch discussion out of a misplaced notion of respect for the deceased, family and friends. They can say nice things about me at my funeral... but in the scuba community I want the incident discussed.

If I should die while diving at least I didn't die in bed.”

Im talking about the emotional sting of hearing over and over how he killed all his animals and its all his fault and could have been prevented if he used his head.. It hurts.. have some class.. he obviously has learned something and so has everyone else that reads this thread. Im sure if you die diving your family will just love hering how it happened and what you did wrong to cause it. Yes people often say how they hope something is learned from it but I can tell you I would be over real quick hearing over and over about the death of my animals.. regardless of how..

Hugo,
Just getting back to civilization and heard from Tacocat about the disaster. Man so sorry for you and for your livestock :(

I haven't read the thread and I'm sure tons of folks have offered to help get your tank back and stocked up, but man as always anything I can do to help you (especially with livestock) just let me know.

Let's talk when things settle down for you.

John
