Open brain has "guts" sticking out?

I've had my open brain for a short time now; perhaps 2 weeks. I noticed in the past few days that a white stringy mass was sticking out of it's mouth.

I've also noticed there's a small spot near the base of it's lobe that has the same stringy stuff hanging out.

Anyone have any idea what's up here? Is my brain not healthy?

I've moved it to a slightly shaded area for now....

My parameters are:
Ca: 440ppm
Alk: 9.0 dKH
N02, N03, Ammonia: 0
Magnesium: 1250 ppm

The brain is sitting on the sand bed in a 24" tall tank lit by 2x250w 14k halides.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
Tyler

placement sounds about right, not too much flow right ? They will usually look like that when you first put them in the tank, or when you get them from shipping. Should not really be doing that after 2 weeks, that is if it just started doing that. Looks like something is bothering it, or fell on it. If it just started doing that, and was fine during the 1st 2 weeks then it should end up being ok. I would wait alittle bit till i feed it, but when it starts looking normal again don't forget to feed it mysis soaked in selcon.

No, there's not too much flow near the bottom; my closed loop outlets angle upwards so the sand bed doesn't get a lot of direct movement; just gentle diffuse movement.

Yes, it was fine during the first week or so and just started doing this recently.. Any idea what this stuff is that's hanging out? Is it's it's internals or something like that?

It still opens up nicely during the night time, but during the day it exhibits this strange behaviour. As I said, I've moded it to a slightly shadier area for now..

Thanks,
Tyler

The "stuff" is mesenterial filaments... Basically their guts. Some corals will evicerate these in response to stress or defense; could be shipping, lighting changes, allelopathy, etc. I have almost an identical brain and mine did this when I gave it a FW bath. I have also seen the mesenterial filaments on mushrooms and acros. Keep an eye on it, and try and feed it - if you have shrimp, cover the coral with the top of a 2 liter bottle cut off, then use a turkey baster or similar to drop mysis directly on the coral. It should quickly swell up and devour the food. Don't use anything too large or it won't be able to digest it; mysis is your best bet. Good luck and keep us updated!
