Opinions on skimmer

I am currently setting up a 120 gallon aga reef ready tank. I am yet undecided on what skimmer would suit me best and of course fit the budget.

I have been leaning toward the ASM G-3 with the mods. Has anybody have/had this skimmer? What are the pros/cons with it? Is there a better choice in the same price range?

Thanks for the help and advice.

I have heard alot of good things about the ASM G3. I however run an external MRC-2 w/ added riser, works great. Depending upon if you are going internal or external.

i have always used aqua c ev skimmers. I am in the process of upgrading my tank to a 220 and will have a aqua c ev 120 for sale. it is a great skimmer in my opinion. lmk if you are interested and we can work out a deal. It can be internal or external, of the sump that is.

I will need a skimmer for my new setup (120-130g tank) too so I am following this thread as well.
Softbal4 - I may be interested if smketyr is not. But not sure I quite caught what brand/model your skimmer is. Do you have a link to a web page with details?

I am thrilled with the price & function of the 125g Coralife Super Skimmer on my 55g tank. A 220 would be perfect for yours.

Here is my opinion - Skimmer producer and type are way overrated. I used to run a Red Sea Berlin XL for years - did a nice job, etc. When I set up the new system - I got a used SeaClone. Yeah, the one everyone cuts down. Well, guess what. It is running on my new system, and the gunk looks the same as with the Berlin, and it is pulling out tons of gunk. I personally think most of the hype about different types is just that, hype. Yeah, a 600 dollar skimmer will probably work about 10 or 20% better than a 100 dollar one - but is it worth it?

My advice - buy the cheapest one you can find for your tank size, but oversize it a bit. For instance, for your 120, I would say a minimimum size of 150 would be specified.

I am trying to put together a 120 gallon tank and I was wondering what skimmer would give me the best bang for the buck as well. Seems like a lot of people like the ASM, where is the best place to purchase that skimmer?

I would save and get a Deltec, worth every penny.

Thanks everyone for responding.

Softbal4, thanks for the offer but I am going with a new one.

Pufferpunk, I use the same superskimmer on my 55, and I love it, pulls out a lot of gunk. I had the 65gal rated and did not do the same job as the 125, which makes me leary of the 220 gal rated.

Is anyone running the 220 gal rated on a 120 or higher?

DeltecRules: Would buy one in a heart beat but I am on a strict budget.

I do have to get the tank up and running soon. I have the empty tank sitting in the living room waiting to be set up. My wife will start nagging soon if I don't get it up and running.

I have been planning this tank for a while, now I have a budget and I am trying to do the best that I can for the dollar amount I have. The ASM has been on my list and fits my budget perfectly.
With the response I think the ASM G-3 is the way to go.

Has anyone done the recirculating modification?

I really appreciate everyones input!

ever think of using an octopus skimmer made by coralvue? Their biggest model is about the size of a g4, works as well as a G3, but cost about $75 less. The needle wheel is similar to the coralife impellar but the same pump as a sedra/oceanrunner. That pump wont shock you like the corallife pump shocked me. I have a coralife 220 running and it wont compare to the others mentioned here.
