ORA bangaiis at petco

dropped in to petco in davis today to pick up some crickets... strolled by the saltwater section as i always do, just to be a looky-loo. and along with their selection of ORA clowns, they also had 3 ORA bangaii cardinals! i've been wanting a bangaii but didn't want to get a wild-caught one. it seems that the ORA ones don't show up very often in our lfs. anyway, i picked one up and am acclimating him right now. anyone else seen them at other petcos? i think that while petco's saltwater systems leave much to be desired, it is great that they are offering a selection of tank-bred fish. i have a pair of ORA black ocellaris that i got from the vacaville petco and they have been happy and healthy in my tank for over a year now.

just wanted to share, and pass on the news in case anyone else was looking for tank-bred bangaiis. :)

Davis Petco's saltwater fish always seems to have ich. I would quarantine any fish from that store or avoid them. Also - many of their fish seems really unhealthy.

The Vacaville Petco seems A LOT better. It seems like someone who really know saltwater is managing their fish department.

Thanks for the info Brooke! I have been looking for some tb to replace my female I lost a few months ago!

i agree, vacaville seems a little better than the one in davis. however, when i stopped in yesterday, everything was looking pretty good.

kim, i had you in mind when i posted this, i remembered you lost your female. i don't know how to tell them apart very well, so i don't know what they had as far as the sexes. something about the dorsal fin, right? it's still hard for me to figure out:)

Thanks for the post Brooke! Bangaiis are so cool, especially when you see a bunch of babies hanging out in a urchin or some other spiny habitat. And I am a huge fan of ORA and what they do - so even better!

I got a pair of baby Bangaiis from Kim about 6 mos ago - doing spectacularly and I think are close to being adults now. The 'male' has a larger banner dorsal that almost reaches his tail and a bit more square looking (larger jaw to hold the babies in I would imagine). The 'female' looks a bit smaller and rounder.

that's what i thought... but still wasn't sure because i've never seen them side-by-side for comparison. i will let you know how mine fares, but i am optimistic so far :) he looks like a happy little guy this morning.

Thanks Brooke. I am going to go by this afternoon and check them out.

Mike - I am so glad yours are doing well. It is always good to hear how the babies are fareing out there in the big world. I recently removed a baby from my refugium that had been there since the last brood of my pair, about 6-8 months ago. It is in my prop tank now and doing really well.

6-8 mos?! Holy crap! How did it live down there so long without you knowing/feeding it?

Here I worry if I miss a day of feeding... 6-8 mos!

Lots and lots of pods!! I had seen it down there when it was about 3 months old and started feeding ocassionally to get it used to prepared foods.

Davis really needs to get a fish store... lots of college students.

They only thing for them is Ace hardware and Petco....
