I have the red one. Have had it for about 6 months. Amazing coral! I would definitely get one. They are supposed to be extremely hardy. Mines completely extends every single day. ORA has kept this species in captivity for over 10 years.

Green is still questionable. All my LPS thrive and the ORA one slowly receded. Seems like people are having better luck with the reds.

Red one goes for $ 100. The green $ 40. I'm debating which one to try in my sps tank.

My green one just dwindled away and died. Id go red if you can afford it. I also question that greens are actually tank raised.

the green one is ora according to liveaquaria. but would hate to waste money on something that wont survive long term.

I know its ORA I bought one 2 and there was almost no growth on to the plug. It looked like they cut up a larger colony of branching goni and just glued it to a plug. I cant prove it, but I dont think they are actually tank raised. They really are not suited for our tanks. Buy a red one. Thats what I am going to do if I can find one locally. ORA themselves states they have had reds captive raised for 10 years, but I would estimate there is 1 red to 6 or 6 greens and reds do better in captivity so have they been tank raise greens for 25 years?? If you look on their(ORAS) web site they dont have anything posted about gonis. Nothing at all. Again I question if they are really tank raised. Just me, but seems odd. I would think thats a huge accomplishment and you would want to shoot it from the roof tops. Instead they post stuff that I can grown in my tanks like zoo, mushrooms, leather and SPS. Now I am nowhere as big or as sophisticated as ORA, but I have breed clowns and sell some corals here and there. Also they say they mariculture clams so they could just be adding gonis in there. I just looked at LA and they dont specifically state aquacultured. Id shoot ORA and LA and e-mail and see what they say. Cant hurt.

i have a good sized green goni- about 6-7 inches for a year now. doing well and provides my sexy shrimps with a place to hang out (under it, not in it). the reds are nice, but a bit pricey imo. all the polyps extend 2-3 inches.

thanks carp. i read the article in this months coral magazine, and it made me want to try a goniopora again. i will definitely consider a red one, but i first need to find room for it in my tank since it can expand quite a bit.

I won a green one (ORA) at MACNA 2010 in Orlando from a raffle last Sept and it has almost doubled in size. I have it on the sand bed near the side. I run a mixed reef. It is a pretty cool looking coral! I'll check back this fall to report on it since a years time seems to make or break these guys.

I bought a small green one ( not ORA ) a month ago and has yet to extend polyps. All my other LPS/SPS & NPS are doing great. I might try a red one since it sounds they do better

I bought the ORA red gonipora from Live Aquaria about 9 months ago and it was pretty small. Expanded to about 2 inches. Now it's fully encrusted itself to larger than a golf ball and expands to about 7-8 inches. It has outgrown my 90. I have it on the sandbed in a corner under an ati 6 bulb.

i have a red one it is an amazing piece of coral. You can definitely find them for less than $100. try reefodyssey.com, ian has some really great stuff.

I have had mine for about 4 months now. It has never extended to the extent I see in the pics. Just the tips are extended, every day, pretty constant. LFS said it was ok. Given the pics of others shown in this thread with the critters in a ball, mine appears the same as a previous poster - cut from the mother colony only. Has not grown, has not receded, just not extended like the reports in this thread.

Is mine in trouble?

Just like all corals location is key. When I first got mine I had it low in the tank and away from heavy flow. I wasn't getting the extension and fullness I have now so I gradually moved it higher and into a higher flow area. Not sure if my pictures show it but I have it almost in front a tunze powerhead. I also target feed it a couple of times a week with a combination of garlic extract, selcon, phytoplan and cyclopeeze.

This is mine 'extended'. color isn't all that great - still trying to work around the MH & Actinics with the camera. Anywho, this is what it has looked like all this time. It is sitting near the top in higher flow. There is no difference between now and how it looked in lower flow. Is it possible this is not a Gomnio?
