ORA hawkins "echinata"

My new baby. Got it yesterday. I was wondering around an LFS who had TONS of ORA stuff, and saw it, and after seeing this thread, had to have it :D

i left my house for 3 weeks and when i came home the hawkins had the most growth out of all my sps.

I just picked this piece up when my work did an order from ORA. I have noticed it polyps are not coming out, except for a couple near the base or the coral. It is located in the sand bed for acclimation and is under indirect MH lighting. I kinda of just skimmed through the forum and was just wondering if this coral needs higher flow than normal SPS?

Ronin as you can see from my pictures I get only a tiny bit of PE from shaded coralites during the daytime, check at night there are tiny lil polyps that come out.

i get great PE in my tank but this one doesn't seem to extend them.

When I first got it it did that too; only putting a few polyps out towards the base during the day, but insane PE during the night. Now I get little to no PE during the day at all out of this piece but the night time PE is remarkable. This is the only acro in my tank, besides a purple monster nub, that shows no PE during the daytime hours.

I'm kind of bummed tho as this coral has taken a turn for the worse lately :-( I think with the new, brighter radium in place it's in too high of light and is showing signs of lightening up quite a bit. Sucks too as I've had it for a long time now and it is totally encrusted/glued in place so I can't move it lower. Hope it hangs in there

EDIT- I see you're in Monterey? Where do you work? I'm always looking for new LFS to check out. I'm over here in Salinas.

Cool thanks i will stop worrying then it is hard to find good information on keeping ORA corals for some reason

when the search function is working do a search for threads with the name of your ORA coral whatever coral it is i promise you will find an old thread dedicated to it here....

i got a huge frag of miami orchid a couple days ago and did a search Turns out 5 threads about this coral...

How do you like the Miami orchid i have been looking at a 4-5 inch frag at work for $35 but it seems pretty brown to me?

Haha, this is Cody huh? Sup, dude; it's Josh here. Miami orchid is aight if you can get it to look like it's supposed to. Otherwise it looks like that brown mess with purpleishblue tips down at the store:D

Look for a post a few pages back by DUSTIN. It's Dustin Dorton from ORA and he posts some shots of an older office tank they had there. In the post there is a pic of one of the nicest miami orchids ever!! I've seen a few nice ones, but for the most part they look like the one down at your store.

they come brown i think but it turns red/purple with lighter tips its is pretty.

The one he's talking about has grown from a small frag into a small colony it's been there so long, and the color has yet to really change. The miami orchid seems to be one of those corals that can be a stunner if everything is perfect, but usually is nothing special IMO.

Yup!!! Gasmans is by far the nicest one I've seen. When he said that it was an orchid I couldn't believe it! Hope yours does well and you get those crazy purple colors!:smokin: It does ssem to be a fast grower so thats is also a plus.

here is mine same deal in the LFS a long time grown and it was totally brown but the purple tips started to come back so i grabbed it $35. i figure for 35 its worth a try, not much looks like it when it is doing well.

dont mind the base i had D&D epoxy on my finger when i attached it to a rock.

Yeah it's me! Just trying to figure out what i need to do with the hawkins. Yeah i like the look of the orchid we have here but it is to brown for my taste but since i lowered the lights here at the store things have been coloring up pretty nice like the superman and purplehaze monti we have, I also think we may have stumbled on some green w/ purple rim monti also!
