ORA Hawkins... Is it just me or does it not like dipping?

YOU have been ignored!
As the title says.. I've tried 3 times now and I've nuked them EVERY time!! Its really aggrivating me.. I just started a new tank and I'm QTing my corals for 6wks, dipping every week. The first two I was using the concentrated Coral RX stuff. Last one using Revive. A couple guys said they don't like it. I've also had the same issue with the ORA tort. I've heard ORA QT regimen is severe but I find it hard to believe because I even took it easy (I thought atleast) with them. I also drip acclimate for several hours as well. What's your experience? I think now I am going to wait on trying again after all my corals have finished QT and get another Hawkins, ORA Tort, and other delicate acros and lightly dip them and observe them for a bit longer than 6wks in my QT before adding them again. Love the Hawkins, I gotta have one in my tank. One of my fav's but I'm not risking introducing AEFW's to my new setup. Been there, done that too many times now.

Whats your experience with this coral?

Thanks,
Chris

How are you dipping them? From my experience a deepwater coral more than 5 min in Revive will nuke majority of them. Are they dying after the first dip, or from one of the others in your series?

At first I would keep them in there for several minutes and then give them a good swirl, shake and rinse in the tank. The first dip nuked 1. White as a bone next day. Next lasted two dips. Third lasted 3 dips before loosing tissue. It's still hanging in there but I expect it to take croak in the next couple days. :(

I really don't want to risk introducing any flat worms to the tank. Just not worth it but I'd love to have a nice Hawkins colony in my tank..

So far about 30 frags have been thru my QT process. I've lost about 10% I'd say including ORA tort, a small ATL Plana and one other. I've QT'd slimers, various Milli's, ATL Rasberrry Sherbert, Sarmentosa, Paletta Plana, Yellow Elysie, Porites, birsdsnest etc, etc..

Some of the more delicate acros will RTN after dips. Hawkins, some planas. I would just place them in a quarantine tank and observe them for AEFW. Most of the time, you can see bite marks on the ones that have the AEFW. On the more delicate acros, I just baste the AEFW off and check for eggs, then put it back into quarantine until I'm sure there are no pests before going into the display.

It's not just you. Been through 2 that went belly up after my dip. Finally bought one from a very trusted source that I did not dip. All is well with that one.

I've been through 3 man! They do NOT like Revive at least. This last one I got looked dead for a month and now looks like its gonna make it!!!

Yeah, they don't like the revive dip. I got one from a lfs killed it in a day. Got another one right after it came from ORA at a lfs and didn't dip it. It was a little stressed from all the inspection and plug removal but it's very happy and growing now.

yeah i nuked one i use tech d, betadine and interceptor in my dip process, and i had to cut the tech d and betadine dip in half the second time i got a hawkins, and it made it through the dip and into the tank, just cut the dip short, and inspect the frag before letting it into the display....

no kidding, I got my hawkins from ORA too. however, I didn't QT it. It went into the tank after a slow tank water drips. after about two weeks I started to see some RTN very fast. I finally save what I can and did a lugos dip. needless to say all of my hawkins went to hawkins heaven.

Well I guess I'm going to wait until my QT is cleared out and maybe do a very light dip and observe it for a while. I really don't like the idea of adding something to my tank without going thru the dipping/QT process.

What you can do is get a small container, fill it with tankwater and put the coral in it. Then get a turkey baster and another container of RO/DI water. If you blast the coral with RO/DI water it will create a little micro environment that the 'bugs' dont like and will knock off any AEFW and other critters. I may not kill them all but at least you will know if the coral is infected.

Interesting...my Red Planet went south after dipping it in Revive. I've been trying to figure out what went wrong and dipping it was the only answer I could come up with.

Reduce the dipping time, swoosh it around good or baste it and thoroughly inspect it; or quarantine it and monitor it.

You are right, they hate dipping, like most thin skinned and deep water acros.the TMPCC will not kill them as often but will brown them out pretty bad.the revive works with a 2 or 3 minute dip and I actually see the aefw fall off most of the time in less then a minute so a shorter dip may work for you.

That must have been exactly what killed the Hawkins & bottle brush I got from you (I don't think I even told you about the hawkins).

Of the 12 frags, all are fine except the hawkins & bottle brush. I dipped all in Revive.

I'm glad I read this thread, I was thinking of buying a hawkins at a LFS. If I do I won't dip it, I trust this LFS.

I thought I'd start another thread that all could post which corals do not respond well to dipping. I've gone thru 4 Hawkins including the one I got from Bruce. I also lost the Crayola Plana :( I loved my old Crayola.. Its going to have to wait until I collect all the other "hard to dip" corals. I am going to Isolate them together in QT for an extended period of time before adding them to the main tank. OR I will QT them 1 at a time for an extended period of time like 2 - 3mos or something.

I hate flushing my money down the drain just as much as anybody but I hate flat worms more. I gotta have a Hawkins though :)

Yeah I agree. I got a Crayola that is fine but the Hawkins nuked immediately after dip. Sea In The City has a nice big piece straight from ORA and I know Marcye takes good care of her tanks so I'm ok with adding it to my frag tank and watching for awhile without a dip.
