ORA red planet

I may have a chunk of it. Once it gets large enough to frag what percentage of the revenue is fair to send to gary. lol

Typical royalties would be between 1/4 and 1/3 of pre-tax profit. If you figure in your cost of the original frag, plus power, salt, chemicals, food etc. to grow it out plus your labor, your "profit" is most likely a negative number. I would say Gary should probably pay you!

you didn't receive my payment yet? I mailed it out two weeks ago!
Anyone that's not fully satisfied should return their coral to me immediately.

...How can you beat that?

Knowing that your browned out unknown Acro grew up and became the famous ORA Red Planet coral thats how! I am sure its not that big of a deal either way but wouldn't it be cool to find out? I personally think so :)

Oh well, afte much careful thought and a sleepless night thinking it over, I've decided to call mine The Martian Zircon or just TMZ for short. Sorry Gary, couldn't do the Marsacro thing.

you fellas crack me up but it would be really kewl to find out if "my" Acro became the "red planet" :spin3:
  I love the spinning head.
Seriously, It would be great if you trace the ORA piece back to your 1995 MArine Oasis piece. Wait, I'd owe Steve Helinski some money. He sold me a 1.5 inch frag for about $20 or $25 about a year ago and DFS wans $89 for 1 inch of the Red Planet. I would say that the piece I have seems to have originated from your piece and I thank you and Steve for that. It is a very attractive hardy coral that I am fond of. We shoud make an effort to insure it gets spread around WNY so we can always enjoy it. It's moving up there with Todds torch.

Hmmm. I think I will be setting up a small SPS tank for my office in December, so if you need help spreading I will do my part to pitch in, preferabley at the non ORA price point though :D.

The tank will be lit with a 250w Radium 20k and I might also add some PC actinic 03's as well so we could see how it colors up with heavy lighting in the 420 to 460 range of the spectum.

I used to be stingey with "superspecial" corals. But I think the more we spread specimens around the better. Unfortunate things occur, accidents, downsizing, getting out, getting back in, etc. It's nice to know how close knit our community is and that if you want a coral bad enough, someone will have a frag somewhere between Buf, Bing, Syr, and Roch.

Many of you have "the eye" for amazing corals, so I think our club has a leg up on making our community one of the better stocked ones. Like Nate said, It's not that certain people have the husbandry skills, but they get first whack at the cherry items.

Yeah i agree

This thread is a breath of fresh air! These are the threads that brought me to this site and this one makes me happy to be back.

The 'official' red planet I have was at the bottom of the tank under the 400w but after a couple weeks does not exhibit the green color base its been bleaching out so it was moved today to a little higher but under one of the 250w...it will also be in a bit higher flow than before.

Just a bit on the placement, not sure how that will play into Gary's finding out if its his.

whichever table it is you should place it in really strong water motion to encourage the horizontal (table) growth habit. In slow flow they both will grow like a stag.

I am changing my rockwork around, finished about 1/2 the work last night...

Plan on doing that.

I also have now seen the local coral being discussed, there is a big frag of it at ARC...looks exactly the same to me except it is growing like a stag.

recent pic of the same exact same coral (URS RP) being discussed in this thread

same exact coral in extremely heavy gyre flow

AS A COMPARISON
this is what I feel might be a millepora or prostrata. The frag was originally from Dr. Klier.

im mad, my False chalice growing below my red planet swooped up some polyps and killed my red planet. Started with 2 little necrotic circles, next thing knew, it was STN'ing, im in the market for a new piece now

Looks good Gary. Mine are holding up well. Could you clue me in on how you have your powerheads , returns and drain set for the gyre?
Been playing with flow lately as corals grow and get tighter.

Gary, I have an Ora red planet that has grown out nicely and I have heavy flow in my tank, it appears to be tabling and has a more green base than blue green. I will try to get a pic tonight but I'm terrible with my camera.
On another note I have a millepora that came from Brent Thoman and it is basically two frags at this point and they are two pretty much different coral and the second frag is off the main piece I have, I will try to photo document thi as well.

the main gyre in my aquarium sweeps water at the surface towards my drains. This results in a bottom blow that travels away from the drains towards the "lagoon" end of my aquarium.
My MP60 is set to oppose the main gyre. At it's lowest setting the MP60 does little to break up the main gyre but I have the MP60 controller set on 'long pulse' and when it kicks on 'warp 9' it's able to reverse the whole gyre in my aquarium.
