Hi all... I had a family day at my house. Sadly my 6 year old nephew decided to pour his glass of orange juice in my tank while i was feeding. It was atleast 200ml. Does anyone know what reporcutions this might have and ways to avoid it.
Please any asvice will do!!!

I think you should ask Randy in the chemistry forum.

Otherwise my guess it's not as bad as it looks. Might spike bacterial bloom depending on your filtration system. I'd take out my water test kit and go over all the parameters to see what changed.

The inhabitants of your tank will probably love it! (At least the microbiotic inhabitants) Like plandy said, I think that all-in-all you've just added a bunch of sugar to the tank. Be thankful your nephew didn't make a wish and toss a penny into the tank.

How large is the tank? If it's 500 liter it will probably cloud up for about 5 or 6 days then clear up.

I dumped 50 ml of something similar in my 300 gallon and it took about 3 days.

Vitamin C good, water good, weak acid will lower PH mayve bad depending on the pre spill PH level. Test and add some baking soda if PH and Alk are low.

Good call GMAX, my PH has been at 9.0 for a while and i have been unable get it lower tried everything. God bless my nephew, my ph is now 8.5!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO
HALE ORANGE JUICE
I have been struggling for months now. ORANGE JUICE ROCKS
Much cheaper than chemicals

white food grade vinegar will assist in the future for such events without the discoloration and the stress level on you! Another weak acid that will lower PH.

It seems like the vodak dosing people claim that if you dose too much sugar into your tank, then you will get a bacteria bloom that will consume all of the oxygen in your tank. You may want to watch your tank for a while, if your fish seem to be gasping for breath at the top of the tank you may need to add an air stone to get some more oxygen into the water.

How are you measuring your pH? I've never run seen a tank run 9.0. I've seen incorrect tests, inproper calibration of pH probes, but never a true 9.0!!!

I hope the tank is ok. This might also be a good time to have a talk with nephew about not dumping things in the tank and your sister or brother about closer supervision. We have a neighbor with a 3 year old that doesn't get invited over anymore for the same reason. He's very inquisitive and his mother doesn't keep an eye on him. He scratched a handmade cedar chest and pushed out the screens on our sunporch the last time he was here.
