Hi I am on a budget, and I was wondering if the orbit marine pro would be a good option for my 65g tank. Was hoping to have montis and some acro. Mostly lps and softies.
Nope.. In general the light is not sufficient for high light demanding corals and really doesn't have the power to penetrate into deeper waters..
Check out Mars Aqua, Galaxy Hydro, Viparspectra,etc.. or similar "Chinese Black Box" LEDs on ebay/amazon if you want low cost proven LED fixtures that can grow anything..
I have one on a 55 gallon. I had to built up rock work almost to the top to get SPS frags high enough so they could get enough light. LPS will do fine under this light. If I had to do it again I would have gone with another light.
Current Orbit and Marineland use 0.3 or 0.5 watt leds that just don't penetrat the water enough. All the others use 3 and 5 watt leds which are good to about 3' deep. The low power fixtures are fine over 12" deep tanks and even some 18" deep tanks, but pretty hopeless over anything deeper than 18".
Look at the list from mcgyver. Look at this post for some help.
Its not that it won't work.. It can..(having corals really close or having low light corals,etc..)
But its limited in its usage compared to other lower/similar cost fixtures..
It might work today but if you want to keep more "higher light" corals in the future you will be upgrading again..
Its "ok" for some situations.. but there are "better" fixtures... plain and simple..
And LFS say a lot of things.. some might be good advice.. some not so much and more to make a sale..
But again without really detailed specifics there are better fixtures..
The ocean revive IS a better fixture.. But you can get others just as good that are even cheaper if budget is a big concern..
You can get 165W LED fixtures all over amazon/ebay for under $100 or so that beat the pants of the current orbit one..
And for like $150 or so get ones with timers/wifi,etc... if needed/wanted..
If you're on a budget like I was when I started my tank I got the Current USA orbit IC led, it is fine for now, but in retrospect I wish I would have just spent a little more on a better quality light to save money in the long run, since I am now planning on upgrading soon.
