Hi,

Just wanted to inform you that the Harlequin tusk I bought from Diver's Den has been in my tank since Thursday morning and has been refusing every food it has been offered (Krill, Silversides, Squid, Mysis, Flakes). Since all Diver's Den fish are supposed to be eating before being shipped could you please find out what it wss eating in your facility. A few more days of this and that fish is going to die.

Thanks

E55MD,

Thank you for your inquiry. All of the fish that leave our Aquaculture and Marine Life facility are eating very well and have been quarantined for a minimum of two weeks. Harlequin Tusks are fed enriched Mysis Shrimp as their primary diet here in our facility. These fish can be temperamental sometimes, and take a week or so to adjust to their surroundings and feel comfortable in their new home. The Harlequin Tusk should swim constantly and require a good bit of room in the home aquarium, and perfect water conditions. Tank mates could be an issue as well if the fish is still not eating. If there are larger, very active, or aggressive fish in the same aquarium, this may deter your new tusk from wanting to come out and eat. These fish can’t resist live ghost shrimp, so you may want to try this to see if you can get him to start feeding again. If you would like, you could certainly Pm us with your tank parameters and other items in the tank so that we can investigate this farther.

E55MD,

Thank you for your reply. Depending on the size of your current fish, it is possible that the Angelfish, Puffer and Bird-Beaked Wrasse may be causing the Tusk to not eat, as these are all either semi-aggressive or aggressive fish and can become quite territorial with anything new. Is the Harlequin Tusk swimming out in the open or is it hiding constantly?

The Tusk swims in the open for short periods of time, especially at night when only my lunar lights are on. The rest of the time he rests in the corner of the tank. He never hides in the rockwork. No fish has showed any interest/aggression towards him.

Gregory,

Thank you for your reply. After further review of the specimens that you have in your tank, and the behavior of your Harlequin Tusk we feel that he may be intimidated by the more aggressive fish in your tank.

We would recommend placing him in a quarantine tank to ensure that he is eating and getting the proper nutrition he needs. Once he has been quarantined for a period of time, and eating well you may slowly re-introduce him to your display tank.
