OT: Anyone in the area considering getting a puppy?

The reason I ask, is I was flipping through a coupon book I have last night and came across (2) $100 Petland coupons that can be used for purchasing select puppies. I have no idea what "select" implies.

Anyway, I already have 3 dogs and don't have any plans on addionals anytime soon. I'd like to offer these to anyone who can use them who'd potentially be able to get those poor dogs out of those stores.

Personally, I'm going to a shelter from now on when I want a dog, and will not continue to support breeders or retailers. However, these are two potential tickets for two lucky dogs and I don't want to see them wasted.

Coupons good at Petland: Akron, Boardman, Cleveland Heights, Medina, Mentor, and Strongsville. May be good at other stores, just give your local store a call and check before requesting a coupon.

I gotta chime in...if you want a specific breed visit the breeder to make sure its not a mill. Anyway thats still cheaper than PetLand even with $100 off. A lot of times you can find puppies on farms where the owners just have a side hobby of raising a breed of dog. Not a terrible way to be born!

Of course the APL is great, but I have allergies and once I find a breed I can live with, I really can't take chances.

Different all together is there is reason for the choice!! :) but I must say I find it funny when people look for a specific breed and after 3 minutes of chatting you realize they know nothing about the breed and many times what owning a pet in general entails..

Like a couch potato wanting a weimerwaner..

no detail but i worked in a petland for 3 days and quit. wont buy spit from them if i am dieing of thirst. just my .02$

I cringe at the thought of anyone buying a dog from a retail store, especially Petland. Do everyone a favor and throw out the coupon. If someone "saves" a dog from Petland they are just going to replace it with another to sell, if there is no demand for dogs retail, it will not be profitable to offer them. You can get any dog imaginable from a rescue/shelter and be supporting a great service with your adoption.

I agree. They will not only replace your "rescue", they may make enough to replace it with two or three new pups. There is a controversy ongoing currently with Ohio Petlands regarding where they get their puppies. Not taking a side, but you should be aware if you send someone there. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090317/ap_on_bi_ge/sick_puppies

I just read that story about petland selling sick puppies the other day. I would have never bought a dog from them, for one, way overpriced, and they always did look sick. Thankfully the Petland that was here in Findlay closed down a couple months ago. All the dogs I have owned have either come from a shelter, and the one I have now came from a farmer who had a neighbor's dog come by before he got his female spayed.

A word of caution here. Weather you like Petland or not, the Humane Society of the United States is not the same non-profit organization that you think off when you think of your local shelter. They are a RADICAL group that would stop the import of coral and fish too if they could. And they have tried. They would ban the sale of meat, and milk becasue they "care" about the animals. The investigation by them and the file fotage used was years old and they have used the same footage to go after other puppy sellers. They claim the footage is part of a current investigation and it is recycled footage from years ago. With that said, there are plenty of reputable places to buy puppies. Both retail or breeders, or the local shelter.

That link is scary!!!! This group (HSUS) is the same group funding House Bill HR 669 trying to ban the import of ALL nonnative species into the us unless on the approved list. 90% of your fish, coral etc could be on this list. Do we really want politicians choosing our "approved" list of animals. The HSUS is a gang of thugs that believe that animals should have the same rights or more than people. Very Scary.

I've always gone with rescue dogs and always will. There are so many available through rescue agencies that it makes no sense to buy one that costs 10 times as much from a pet store. And if you want a specific breed, go to a breeder.

I think that the days of buying that "Cute little puppy in the window" are way gone. Nowadays there are too many idiots trying to turn a quik buck. The animals are always the ones to suffer whether its from the poor choice of breeding, living conditions or another person buying them for reasons other than having a buddy.
I would hope that oneday pet stores will just sell fish, maybe rodents , snakes and such. Even birds do very poorly in pet stores. Perhaps a web thing can be put in place with links for people to buy from reputable breeders if that is what they want , outside of acquiring their pets from rescues or via adoptions.

Just my unsolicited 2 cents worth!
